Stanchion question
Author:
Am just about finished overhauling the stanchions. A few were leaking into the core, mainly the ones next to the gate in the lifelines that were used for hand holds over the years. Did the whole job; dried the core, routed out any rotted balsa, filled with thickened epoxy, redrilled the holes and installed the bases with a stainless steel backing plate.
Last step, install the stanchions in the bases but have a question. The bases are like a cup IE no drain until water reaches the level of the lower of the two screws that go through the base into the stanchion to hold them in the base. So water will collect in the bottom inch or so of the base and just sit there. The bottom of the stanchions that sit in the base are discolored and slightly corroded but still look structurally fine. However over time I’m concerned about crevice corrosion and possible failure of the stanchion at the base.
I could drill drains in the bottom of the base to let the water but that would be a bit of a pain. I could try to seal or caulk around the stanchions in the bases with some appropriate boat goo to keep the water out but the constant flexing I’m guessing will fairly quickly break the seal and result in new leaks. I could fill the whole base with boat goo so leave no room for water to collect.
Am I over thinking this or is this a valid concern? Any other suggestions?

I think everything you asked was valid ….I asked myself every one of them too. I didn’t go any further though, just said FI and put them back in.

The very best thing you can do is purchase a bunch (2 or 3) 3/16″ cobalt
drill bits for like $15.00. If your stanchion bases are out, that’s the
time to do the drilling – Make sure you center punch first so the bit
doesn’t wander. Drill slow with pressure. Easy peasy. Really. Just be
patient. Drill as low as you can in the vertical tube, even through the
weld if you can.Bob

One thing I did while bases were off was to drill through and make the TINY 10-32 screws into bolt thru.

Thanks all for the suggestions and commentsÂ
Alan. Had looked at the screws holding the stanchion in the base and they do look small but drilling through had not occured to me.  Wish you hadn’t mentioned it because now I’ve got another item on the to do list. Â
Bob. Drilling a drain hole flush with the base seems like the best solution to the whole issue.  Can just do that when I’m through drilling the base and stanchion to replace the machine screw and through bolting.
Ken,  I didn’t really start thinking about the lack of drainage from the base until I had already bedded and bolted down all the stanchion bases and looked at the bottom of the stanchions before installing them.  #$!#$!!!!   So the immediate plan is to follow your suggestion and do the drilling upgrades later.
So on to the next job on the list.

Just a quick question on stanchions and lifelines. Â My boat has 3 lifelines surrounding the boat through the stanchions. Â Was this standard or did the PO install these?

Hi Dan
My 422 has only 2 and the several 424’s (and other 422s) I have seen all had 2 as well.
