ParticipantThe next thing we all need to be thinking about replacing, IMHO, is our steering chain. The Edson priced are outrageous about $300 for chain and cable. All if the shelf parts. The thing is that the #50 SS chain only comes in multiples if ten feet and each boat only needs 2.5ft. Figure about $30 for 2.5ft plus two master links plus shipping. You can get 26 feet of cable and clamps from your favorite supply house or I could tag on to my order some for you. I have a chain breaker tool to get the rivets (pins) out. Who’s interested?

Keep in mind that Edson replaced the bronze pins on the steering mechanisms to SS.
When I replaced the chain and cables last year, I did the pins also.

Pete,
Count me in for a 2.5′ piece of chain. The cable I can see
underneath is like new, as are the sheaves, but it would do no
harm to at least have a replacement chain aboard. Thanks!

I only looked because I had the engine and fuel tank out. I was laying down staring up at the bottom of the pedestal and noticed 2 broken strands of wire. AND one of the pins was backed 1/2 way out and was worn down pretty good. Had to replace the pin and bushing and of course the cable. The chain was in good shape. Easy job with no fuel tank…….
Edson had the original Pearson drawings and knew exactly what to send me.
This was shortly having sailed from Beaufort NC to NYC with about 24 hours of 30+ kt winds from the quarter. Scary thoughts after the fact to think of the possibilities.
There’s a lesson there someplace.

ParticipantI found a “spare” one on my boat which had a bit of surface rust and a frozen link. I cleaned it in WD-40brand rust remover (which I love, especially for tools). I used my chain tool to try to loosen the frozen link and two plates of the chain cracked, more like crumbled as they were full of rust. Such is the life of stainless.

I regularly inspect and grease the steering cables and sheaves
underneath, but how do you inspect/lube/change the chain and pins
inside the Edson pedestal? I had the compass out a couple of
years ago and what I saw looked shiny and fine, but it was a
cursory look-around from the top only. Do you unmount the whole
pedestal to service it? What Pandora’s box will that open? I
looked at the manual a year or two ago and remember it as
intimidating.Tor

Roger,
That removable panel above the engine was a lazy design flaw. One
of the first things I did when I got this boat was to remove it,
cut it all the way across a little below the drop-down
hatch-doors that lead to the instrument backs, and hinge it. Ever
since I only have to lift off the engine top-cover and lift &
hook the hinged panel to have clear access to the whole engine.Tor

Requests for the chain are still coming in. I will until next weekend
or so for everything to settle and then produce a list to summarize what
I understand in terms of who wants what and then get on to figuring out
the payments and getting stuff ordered. Thanks for your patience. My
assumption is that no one is in a real rush here and I have the boat in
the yard this week doing some work on it (raising the water line,
getting prop shaft checked, etc).Pete

IF YOU ARE IN FOR THE STEERING CHAIN OR CABLES, PLEASE READ THIS LONG
MESSAGE AND RESPOND TO THIS ASAP. AFTER YOU READ THIS, YOU MIGHT WANT
TO GET SOME CABLES AND THE TENSIONING EYE BOLTS (which now appear to me
to be the weak link in the system). (Also see below for how to send me
the money for your parts).SEE BELOW FOR THE SUMMARY OF CHAIN ORDERS. _WE NEED TWO MORE ORDERS TO
MAKE UP AN EVEN TWELVE WHICH WOULD GO INTO THIRTY FEET EVENLY. _ ANY
MORE TAKERS? IF NOT, WE CAN JUST DO THE MATH AND OF TEN ORDERS OUR OF
30 FEET OF CHAIN. Each 2.5′ length of chain will include two master
links. I am trying to get the ones with cotter pins but we might have
to settle for ones with retainer clips (just as strong). The chain can
ship in a small USPS flat rate box so the total would be $46.70 with
shipping to you. (sure beats over $100 from Edson) (If there are two
more buyers, it goes down to $39.80).
(details on the cable kits are further down).Well guess what broke on our boat this weekend… not the chain or cable
but the eye bolt that holds the cable to the steering quadrant. The
crevice corrosion in both of these bolts was amazing … once they were
cracked in two. The first one broke when I let the wheel get away from
me while zooming off a grounding in reverse and the wheel spun all the
way around and the quadrant hit the stop hard. The other broke when
when I loosened the locking nut (two nuts back to back). This may be
the part we all need to be replacing. The thing is that there is no
simple way for me to replace just the eye bolts if you have swaged ends
(as opposed to bulldog clamps) on the cables as we have on our boat.
(If you have cable clamps instead of swaged fittings at that end of the
cables, you can swap the eye bolts easily). So I had to cut the cable
ends off with a cutting disk in the angle grinder (the fast way to cut
cable). So I am off to replace the whole kit from end to end.AS TO OUR ORDER FOR CHAIN…HERE IS THE SUMMARY OF THE ORDERS I HAVE SO FAR:
Name Chain Cable
Tor Piney 1 0
Roger Bigger 1 1
Evan Morgan 1 0
John Stevenson 1 1
Dale Longtin 1 0
Rick Dugger 2 0
Paul Audi 1 0
Pete Dubler 2 1Total 10 3
For those of you ordering the cables, here is what I will send:
2- 9′ cables (1/4″) 316 stainless 7×19 wire
4- Nicopress fittings for the end that connects to the bronze chain
adapter (you will have to swage these yourself)
4- stainless heavy duty thimbles
4- stainless bulldog clamps (cable clamps)
The cable kits with these parts (can add eyebolts, see below), will be
$53.00 (This will ship in a medium USPS flat rate box but I credited
the cost of the small box that would go with the chain since both the
chain and cable can fit in the same medium box).DO YOU WANT THE EYEBOLTS ALSO? PLEASE LET ME KNOW RIGHT AWAY.
I will see if I can get a good price on the Edson ones on Monday.
Looks like about $30 per pair plus shipping to me.
Edson list on the “take-up eyes” (aka eyebolts) is $17 each. I have
not been able to find another source of stainless welded eyebolts that
have the such long fully threaded shanks so I am looking to order the
Edson ones. (not McMaster, Suncor, Sea-Dog, Bosun Supply, Ken Forging…).You should be able to reuse the clear plastic sleeves at the ends of
your chain. How to send money. (First, if you want eyebolts, let me know and wait
for me to get that price to you). Please use Paypal but please use the
person-to-person sending of money method instead of the merchandise sale
method. The person-to-person method takes the money from your paypal
balance or bank account but does not cost me the paypal fees ($0.30 plus
2.9%). Send to my email pete at dublerfamily dot com. Or if you must,
send me a check at 1659 PGA Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32935 – but do let me
know that you are sending a check. In the meantime… some good reading:

For those of you who did not note Pete’s link to the Edson
instructions for this (as I didn’t the first time), here it is
along with a few notes he shared with me when I asked:http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/maintenance/chain_and_wir
e_steering_comprehensive_guide.pdfThe chain comes out of the top of the pedestal under the compass:
. Put a towel in the pedestal before taking out the control cable
cotter and clevis pins!
(You’d have to take the pedestal off if you dropped these parts
down into it.) . Remove throttle and clutch lever assemblies.
. Use messenger lines to trace the route of the cables; they
cross over inside the pedestal. Also, some may have missed Pete’s explicit request that we use
PayPal to pay him, rather than sending checks. He wrote:“How to send money: Use PayPal, but please use the

ParticipantPete. I figure you can only get (4) 2.5 foot takers in a 10 foot chain, but if it works out, I will take you up on a 2.5 foot section also. I put in a new throttle cable two years ago and had to get into the pedestal; hoped I would never have to do that again. Now I need to replace the gearshift cable. Might as well do everything while I’m in there
Thanks,
