ParticipantAs I organize projects to be accomplished while Lady Leanne is hauled in December, I plan to upgrade the Lasdrop unit. She has a 1.5″ shaft, but I don’t know the diameter of the stern tube. I’m in Atlanta till then and want to order parts so we all end up on “The Rock” (O’ahu) at the same time and at the same place.
My boat is #135. What is the size of the stern tube? Does anyone know if all of the 424’s have the same size stern tube? Has anyone installed the generation II unit (any tips)?

ParticipantI installed a Strong Seal from Tides Marine 2 seasons ago. Works great.
Shaft tube OD = 2.5″ (actually measured 2 & 9/16″)
Shaft tube ID = 1 & 13/16″Rick

ParticipantLady Leanne presently has a Lasdrop (first generation) that has been on there for several years. When I bought her, the surveyor squeezed the rubber sleeve and thought it was a little tender and advised me to replace it. The cost to replace it is almost half of the cost of a new unit, so I am going to stick the latest one in there.
One of Lasdrop’s argument is that packing allows a small bit of water in the bilge, that mixes with contaminants that are then pumped overboard. The unit presently on board has worked well. Now the only water that gets in the bilge is from blind overfill of the water tanks.
I believe the outside rubber sleeve of the Lasdrop fits over the stern tube with clamps (memory) and that is why I need the stern tube diameter.

ParticipantWe also use a Lasdrop on Clairebuoyant. Used on on P-36/2, our prior boat as well. Very pleased with both, but offer three suggestions:
Put a hose clamp on the shaft to keep the seal ring from sliding up the shaft if the set screws get loose.
When you launch, “burp” the seal to let water in. Otherwise it will trap air and overheat.
Clean the trans end of the shaft really well to avoid damaging the o-ring inside the seal ring.

Quent,
Alternatively, you can put on one of your spare shaft zincs on instead of a
hose clamp to lock the Lasdrop bellows collar in place. It’s a natural fit
and gets one spare zinc out of the storage locker.Tor

Actually, I believe the credit goes to someone else on this net who
mentioned it a couple of years ago. I jot down a lot of the good ideas I
pick up here and elsewhere, but rarely remember from whom they came.Tor
