My wife Vicky and I have recently moved aboard our P424 “Painkiller” #91. While we haul open every interior locker to inspect what’s in it, should it be kept, should it be somewhere else, is my stuff better, etc, etc, my mind is filled with the major task of the cockpit lockers. I’m planning on tackling them alone when my wife leaves for a road trip in the upcoming week. From the organization or very much lack there of, of the interior, I expect to gut the three cockpits all at once. There is one place that I believe the PO made very good use of below decks, that’s the deep bilge. He has 6 five gallon pails with lids stacked on each other. Of course each pail holds exactly 38 cans of beer/soft drink.
My curiosity is in the cockpit lockers. What have some of you found works for you? My only thoughts so far is that possibly milk crates and buckets will fill the battery area well. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated, thanks.

Ken,
When I got Silverheels the aft lazarette was a spaghetti mass of lines and
other crap 4′ thick. I built in a rope hanging locker with 3 horizontal
bars, plus a sturdy shelf to starboard to support a bucket that serves as my
stern anchor rode locker, partially visible in one of the attached photos. A
pair of 3-gallon buckets forward of the hanging lines contains small lines
and, to port, several ready dock lines. This arrangement has proven to be
excellent.I removed the batteries from the starboard cockpit locker. They were junk
anyway and the location seemed vulnerable to getting wet. I left the
built-in battery boxes in place, though, and use them as storage
compartments. The port cockpit locker I left wide open and compartmentalize
it with buckets, large kitty-litter boxes and a couple of milk crates. It
doesn’t look Martha Stewart neat, but I know exactly what’s in there and
where to lay my hands on things quickly.Tor

Tor, that aft lazarette looks great, I just might have to copy that to give me a starting point for sailing essentials, I brought some spare stainless pipe just for that reason. I don’t care for the battery placement either but for now I’ll have to deal.
Thanks,

No, nothing about the boatyard which I sent from my att e-mail. Obviously you got that. Try vickykenr@gmail.com I just opened it recently.
FYI you did double post on the forum with your pictures of the lazarette. You do that quite often

The double posts are not Tor’s fault. It’s because there’s a time delay
before we who manage the site get to seeing his emails that are too big and
when he sends them again as smaller emails.Bob

Thanks, Bob. I wasn’t going to name names. 🙂
That explains this morning’s double post, but not the frequent doubles Ken
mentioned.Tor

Ken,
It seems your mobile phone email address is problematic for my mail server.
I’ll resend that info now to your gmail address.Today’s double post was a shared accident – I actually made an effort to
stop the first copy and thought I had. You might choose to save the one with
the larger-size photo files for reference. I didn’t know I have been making
frequent double-posts to the forum in general. Have no idea how or why, or
what I can do to stop it from happening. Other than this morning, I normally
send a message just once and receive a single copy of it back after it
arrives at the forum’s server and is forwarded to the members. No indication
at this end of the doubles you’re getting. My regrets.Tor

Dan, my guess is……under the main bunk where the drawers are.

Dan,
I squeezed 5 Group 31 AGM batteries beneath the aft cabin bunk’s aft inboard
corner (see attached photos), plus 1 Group 27 dedicated starter battery in
the bottom inboard corner of the aft cabin “wet locker” (aft of the nav
table), plus 1 Group 27 dedicated windlass battery beneath the V-berth, port
side immediately aft of the water tank.Tor

Tor: I’m stuck with two 4d’s right now. Curious as to how many AH’s you get with 5 group 31s?

Dave and I copied Tor’s setup but we put them one compartment forward. We
also have a optima starting battery in the aft wet locker and a group 31
agm under the v-berth serving dual purpose for the bow thruster and anchor
windless. We use the old battery boxes for storing tools now.

Good call, Pat. I think putting all that weight a little closer to the
center of gravity is worth the slightly longer wire runs. I’d have put my
batteries in that next locker, too, if Silverheels’ water heater wasn’t
already in there.Tor

We recently purchase Blue Moon, hull 189 and the lockers needed a lot of organizing. My husband tackled the project early on and came up with both a practical and elegant solution for the starboard and aft lockers. We’re leaving the port locker with only line organizers so our folding bikes will fit. Some pictures are posted on our blog http://bluemoonsails.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-new-adventure-begins.html.
They were built from marine grade plywood then glassed into place. The starboard shelf fits over the batteries and can be removed to service them. The aft shelf is actually built to match the contours of the stern. Hope this helps. -
