      Tall ketch rig dimensions

      Author:

      All,

Does anyone have rig dimensions for the tall rig ketch that was apparently an option for later 424s?

I’m probably replacing my sticks, and if there is a rig plan I can get to my rigger it will save a lot of time and effort.

I have an option on a 51′ mast, but would like to hear of anyone else’s experience.

Use is definitely coastal cruising with limited need for bridge clearance.

      Thoughts? Comments?

      Thanks

      Ewan

If I were either going to change masts or add a baby stay, I’d do the
latter (oh, wait, I have). The 48.5 foot mast is plenty tall enough for
the boat and adding 2.5 feet doesn’t seem worth the effort.

      But that’s just my opinion.

Here’s a convenient place to get rig dimensions:

Changing the rig dimensions is a big deal. You’d need new sails, wire and main mast, assuming the mizzen for both rigs is the same. I’d guess this to be about $35K total. If you have the shorter mast, switching to the taller mast would give you a bit of performance improvement but the 424 in any option was never a fast boat. There are less expensive ways to improve performance, e.g. folding/feathering prop, larger genoa, and asymetrical spinnaker. You might keep your eyes open for a salvage tall ketch within shipping distance. Unfortunately, they come up every now and then. If the rig is still in good condition, you may pick the stuff up for a song.
