I’ve written about using the mizzen sail for a few
magazines over the years
(http://www.tor.cc/articles/mizzen.htm), but just today I
discovered yet another use for the sail. An annoying
swell started working into the harbor where I’m
anchored, at an oblique angle to the wind. All the
monohulls here began rolling like crazy, Silverheels
included, which got really old after a while. Normally,
I’d either set a stern anchor or spring the rode
(http://www.tor.cc/articles/rode.htm) in this situation to
angle the boat end-on to the seas, but I don’t really
have room to do that here at the moment. So it occurred
to me to try something different. I simply hoisted the
mizzen sail and secured it hard over to one side with a
preventer. This holds the stern off the wind a bit,
enough to almost receive the swell end-on (which is a
MUCH kinder motion) instead of on the beam, and the
taut sail also dampens what little roll remains.
Awesome! It’s a LOT more comfortable aboard now.
I’ve just added a sketch of the mizzen as an oblique
riding sail to that article, the second sketch down on
the page.
Sure am glad I have a ketch.
