I know that it is a simple issue but now that I have tackled the engine it’s time for the rigging. The PO had installed the topping lift by tying it through a shackle at the end of the boom which is fine for the main because I just take it off when the sail goes up and secure it to the mizzen mast. The mizzen topping lift is also not adjustable and would be difficult to remove. I added a block at the end of the boom and now the boom twists away from the side that the topping lift is cleated off on. The sails are not on the boat yet, hopefully this weekend. Will that change the way the boom sits? I am looking for suggestions and photos of the proper way to manage the topping lift. Thanks fot any suggestions.

I cant’ imagine the boom twisting away unless the block does not have a swivel on it. I always like to have at least a 2 part purchase on it so I can adjust the topping lift. A trick when racing, not that these boats are anywhere near fast, but…in light air, the weight of the boom is too heavy and pulls any shape out of the main. You can tighten up on the topping lift a little bit and get the shape (draft) back to looking like a sail

On my boom, the topping lift attaches to one side of the boom, runs through a block on the topping lift then through a cheek block on the other side of the boom and forward to a cleat. No twisting involved.

Are we talking about the topping lift on the main boom or the mizzen boom?  I know Rich is talking about the mizzen.

Sorry, I have only one boom, the main. My setup is what Pearson rigged. I assume that Pearson used the same method on the mizzen, but I may be wrong.

Rich.  What you described is my mizzen topping lift – the reason I assumed you were talking about a mizzen.  The original topping lift for my main boom is what I have heard called a Harbor Lift – just a wire with a snap shackle that clips to the end of the boom.  In this case the wire is attached to the mizzen mast.  I added a topping lift to the sheave box at the masthead.
Now, Linus, it sounds like you are asking for recommendations on the mizzen topping lift.  Is that correct?  What Rich described is what I have on my mizzen.  As he says it does not cause any twisting of the mizzen boom.  As far as I can tell this was the original Pearson rigging.

      John,

The arrangement Rich is talking about is the same as I have on both booms – there is a fixed topping lift from the mastheads that terminates in a thimbled eye.  A line from one side of the boom runs up to a block at the eye and back to the other side of the boom.  This then runs through a cheek block forward on the boom to a cleat.  I think that the mizzen originally may have had a block to a tang at the outer limit of the boom but I'm not sure.  Anyway, both work marvelously.

My boat’s topping lifts are the same as Bob’s and work well.

I am asking for suggestions for both. Neither of mine are adjustable and I am looking for suggestions. Once again Rich has a great solution for the mizzen. It sounds like that will be easily adjusted from the cockpit.
