What are the general thoughts on the need of keeping the shaft brake on the velvet drive transmission with a folding prop?

Aaaah, another religion-based discussion. You could have added a question
on anchors to get more blood flowing. [?]

I do not have a shaft brake, but I do have a Velvet Drive and a Maxprop.
When I shut down the engine and resume sailing the Maxprop does not
immediately fold. So the prop free-wheels. I have been told by the tech
reps for the Velvet Drive and Walter that there is not adverse effect from
this free-wheeling. However, it is noisy. With my previous transmission
(Paragon) I could shut down the engine in gear and the prop would feather
with no free wheeling. I have noticed that once the speed gets >6 kts my
Maxprop usually feathers and the free-wheeling stops. So if you don’t
believe the Velvet Drive & Walter experts or you can’t stand the noise, then
maybe the shaft brake is a good option. I plan to live with it for now.

As you may or may not have heard, I’ve used the fact that the Velvet Drive
rotates to generate power with my fixed prop.

For a folding prop to fold or feather or whatever something has to stop or
slow the shaft so that the water resistance can do the job of folding or
      feathering.

Can I have your old fixed prop?

I thought I was probably the only owner with a folding prop. Mine works
great. I removed the break many years ago. Once folded, there is no need
for a brake. I briefly put the engine in reverse and then neutral and shut
      the engine down.

      Rich,
Do you have a Velvet Drive tranny?

I have a BW Velvet-Drive. My first prop was a 2-blade martec folding prop.
I replaced that with a 3-blade folding slipstream. Neither required a
brake. I orignally left the brake on, but removed it because it just got in
the way. I still have it in my spare parts bin if I eventually decide to
      replace it.

The slipstream is a much better prop. The three blades are geared together
so they open and close in synchronization. Reverse is good and forward
performance is similar to a fixed prop.

Thanks everyone for your respones. I had to pull the starter, to rebuild it. And had to pull brake to get at it .One of the pads fell off ,and i just looked at .Asked myself ,why put the whole mess back on? Juilee has a three blade flexoprop on her. Which has plenty of power in foreword and reverse . But makes her walk (run) to port at more than half astern. Note. Pulled starter for what I thought was the solenoid. But was rust on the pinoin shaft. Getting starter total rebuild. Also have complete manuals on w58 ,velvit drive ,.r20 vdrive .If anyone is intrerested.

I don’t think our model is available anymore. This is one of the current options:

      Joe,

My boat didn’t have a shaft lock when I bought her, either. I guess the
shaft & Paragon transmission had been freewheeling under sail for 30 years.
I installed a Shaft-Lok (http://www.shaftlok.com). Whatever Pearson used to install
isn’t in production anymore as far as I know.

The pads in my brake are rectangular. Anyone seen replacements for them?

You can get them at napa….I think they are volvo break pads. Just bring
one and they can match them up.

They are itty bitty tiny like 1/2″ x 1.5″ That does not seem like a
      Volvo brake pad.

      John,

Thanks. Also on the pearson drop page is a picture of my tranny with
with brake in place. Are you perhaps suggesting replacing the whole
pad assembly? On my brake, the pads are free (loose) rectangular blocks
      of material.

mine is a bit different…I just replaced the pads. I had to “unhook” the
assembly and then replaced the pads and re-installed.
