ParticipantSo it’s been a few years now since we talked about v-drive cooling.
I am ready to by-pass it, straight from strainer to pump.
I haven’t heard any negatives yet from the folks who have done it, so far. Is that pretty much the consensus.

ParticipantI have bypassed my v-drive cooling but just splashed a couple of weeks ago and haven’t yet cranked the engine. I made the change based on reports from a couple of forum members that had done it some time ago and had no problems and one owner I’ve met a couple of times with the same experience. I don’t recall hearing anyone that had a problem after the change.

ParticipantI spoke to a marine gearbox mechanic a few weeks ago, who said it probably wouldn’t be a problem, but that he would only be relaxed about it if the V-drive temperature was monitored. He suggested a temperature guage from the unit. He said whilst he did did not expect any issues running the unit without the water, they were designed to be water cooled for a reason. Are you considering measuring the temperature of the unit?RegardsStephen ParryS.V. Blue Pelican

ParticipantI bypassed mine a couple of months ago and just did a motoring passage from Norman's Cay to Lake Worth FL. 28 hours of the trip was in very light winds and the v drive temp was 140* and no problems.

ModeratorBest thing to do would be to fill the case with oil. It will facilitate heat transfer out of the case into the environment and keep temps down.
