We have nice vinyl cockpit cushions that were original back in 1979. They are worn and need to be recovered. I took a quick look at what it would cost to redo them and turned white. I think I’ll restore them instead. Has anyone restored vinyl cushions like this? If so, what did you use and what were your experiences?

If the foam is good, why not just sew your own new covers?

      Rich,
I considered making replacement cushions out of foam and vinyl convering.  I decided it was too much work and the best price I could get to have them made was over $1200.  I went with Bottomsiders for about $900.  A lot of boat units, but better than spending several weeks handcuffed to a sewing machine.

      Rich:

I also had an original set of cockpit cushions that looked “creepy” when we bought Lady Leanne. We replaced with Bottomsiders, which fit perfectly. The six piece grouping covers all seating around the cockpit and is split to allow access to the lazerettes. I think they were around $1K.

John is right ………and they don’t hold water and can be used to lounge anywhere.

If you want to have the benefits of bottomsiders but don’t want to pay the cost. It’s just closed cell foam with a finish applied. I have the closed cell foam which I bought at a fabric store and had the texilene (or however it’s spelled) fabric covered made for it.
The kids use them for floats in the water….. actually they sit on them and shave their legs while their floating around. More buoyancy then a PFD.

My sewing skills aren’t that good and I don’t want to spend a bunch of money right now on new covers. Most of the cost is labor, so saving the foam isn’t that big a deal. I’ve had rough quotes of about $35.00/sqft for replacements, that’s about $1600 for a new set.
