ParticipantFinally getting to drain and flush my W-58 cooling system. Just checking on the drain location as it is not shown in the parts catalogs that I have. There is an elbow coming out of the block just behind the oil dipstick with a small square drive plug in the forward facing end of it. Is this the mysterious drain? Just want to be sure before I pull stuff apart.

ModeratorUsually there’s a petcock there, but if someone used a plug instead, yes,
that’s it.Bob

ParticipantAloha Bob: The elbow that is just aft of the dip stick turned out to be a drain/access (?) for the engine oil. I opened it and, yes, there was engine oil in there. Perhaps there was once an oil pressure gauge in there that a PO removed and replaced with a screw plug There are a couple of screw-out plugs further aft of the oil elbow that are flush with the block surface. I wonder if either of these are the coolant drain. Your thoughts?

ModeratorLet me look in the morning. I thought you’d have the petcock there in
addition to the oil pressure sender. I’ll get back to you.Bob
Pardon the brevity. I’m typing this on my phone and I hate typing on my
phone.

ParticipantGents-
The W58 coolant drain plug is located on the starboard side of the engine
(port side of boat). It is a brass plug about an inch up from the oil pan,
and in the middle of the block. I just drained coolant from there this past
fall to completely remove all the old standard antifreeze and replaced with
extended life coolant.Good luck!

Rod,
I’ve been following this discussion because I’m about to flush my system
but could not find the plug either. After reading your response I went and
looked at my 71C four and sure as hell there is a plug about where you
said. It just so happens that the end of my starter is in a direct path for
a socket to reach it. For the life of me I can’t see getting a wrench in
there without either alternator and raw water pump off or the starter off.
Maybe a skinny arm from underneath. Tomorrow is another day!

RichCarterParticipantI don’t have the W-58 so I can’t comment on the coolant drain, but here’s a link to my favorite tool. I can’t say for sure that this would help you in this instance but I find them very helpful.
I have one set of metric and one set of SAE on my boat and another set at home. With two wrenches, you have 8 sizes. They work very well. If I don’t know the size, I just grab all 4 and stuff them in my rear pocket. I have both metric and SAE covered that way, 16 sizes in total.
