ParticipantFor those of us who still have W58’s installed.
I was mucking around yesterday trying to replace my hot water heater. Of course this is one of those projects where 1 project turns into 3.
The hoses (1 1/4″) for the hot water heat exchanger run back to the rear of the engine where one connects to the engine heat exchanger and the other comes off the coolant tank.
Pretty sharp bends the way it is currently plumbed with the oil heat changer and all. On mine, both hoses are “inserted” into other hoses and double clamped. Not a real good way to do this. The boat came this way. The hoses that are connected to the engine are elbows that are 1 1/4 on one end and something bigger on the other (enough for the 1 1/4 hose to slip into).
Anyone else have this setup? Anyone have pictures or descriptions of their setup?

ModeratorHi Alan,
This sounds like the hoses were replaced at some point and they couldn't get the right size hoses. I believe they're supposed to be 7/8″ hoses – the use of inserts into a hose to seal a hose is pretty bad practice and is usually reserved for emergency use. I can take a picture and send it off if you'd like.

ParticipantThe output side the heat exchanger and the coolant tanks are 1 1/4 (measured).
I know that sealing hose this way is not correct. Just need to find a suitable solution.
The engine was removed before I bought the boat to replace the fuel tank. I think they cut the hoses and put it back in any which way. I am left to clean up the mess.
Just trying to figure out what was there orginally.

ModeratorI figured you knew that. I can send you a picture later if you want and I'll measure all the stuff so you'll know.

I don’t know about the Westerbeke engine , but I have a Raritan 5 gallon water heater and the hose size needed to it is 3/4″. The outlet from my engine is also 3/4″.
