A friend of mine who owns a 40′ Endevour with a W63 needs a replacement starter. I know there are 424 owners out there with that engine. Has anyone found a decent replacement starter at a reasonable price?

Has he tried taking the old one to a regular old starter repair shop?  I’ve had pretty good luck with the local shop either rebuilding or finding a replacement for old marine engine starters..

Rebuilding it would have made a lot of sense while his boat was in winter layup. If we pull it now, it will be without an engine until the shop finishes with it. The starter works but occasionally needs a rap with a hammer to start the engine.

Local shop I deal with that does starters and alternators can usually do a turnaround in a few days.  Another alternative, I’ve taken a starter in and they were able to identify the model and come up with a replacement.  Would involve a little extra work but maybe take the old one off, take it in for ID, replace it while waiting for the replacement.

W63 is basically the same engine used on 1985 ford Ranger Diesel. For a starter, check with Rock Auto. Before I changed mine out for a Beta Marine, I bought parts through Rock Auto.

Agree on spare starters. Bought a W58 for parts and had that starter rebuilt for my backup.
I tried googling starters and parts for the W63 and found very little.  Any chance your buddy has the Westerbeke part number?ÂÂ

Thanks Steven,
Can anyone verify that this is the correct part?https://www.starterpros.com/PartDetails.aspx?IDNum=12062
He has a center cockpit boat. His engine is under the cockpit. The port side of the engine where the starter is located is very hard to get at. I want to get in there just once with the correct replacement part in my hand.

There is a picture of the starter on the Rock auto Web site.
