There are a number plans out on the net. Pete also built one and he is much better at writing up the details.
Basic WM is nothing more than a high pressure pump and a filter.
I purchased a 6 hp Kubota diesel and mounted a pump from a carwash to it.
Put the whole thing in aft lazerette.
Hoses made up at a hose shop.
      Membrane off the shelf 2.5×40.
      Pump is 1000psi 4.5 gpm.
Everyone will tell you the pump won’t last because of bronze pistons and hp saltwater. But, for the cost of the car wash pump on eBay you could buy a few compared to the SS pump.
The panel is mounted under the center companionway. And is piped into the bow and port tanks. Not fancy or automatic but sure beats trekking to a faucet every few days with jugs.
The rest is just plumbing and wiring.
      Less than 2k spent.

      Brilliant assessment, Alan!

I’d be interested in your 35gph water maker equipment.

I have a Spectra but added a PLC (programmable logic controller) panel
to control it. (can run it manually also of course). What I put on my
Kubota 6hp is a scuba compressor and a 200 amp firetruck alternator.
The compressor is onj an electric clutch and I used an Ample Power
regulator that has an input to switch down the alternator output when
the compressor clutch is engaged thus almost the full power of the
engine goes to either the compressor or the alternator.

When I was in Saint Lucia there was no water on the north end of the island. There was some type of emergency and they were rationing it. Even the taxis drivers stopped washing their cars. The boats had to sail to Martinique to fill their tanks. Glad I had the WM.
In the Caribbean, most places charge for water.
In the Bahamas a lot of places give it away. But boat too big, water too small, have to dinghy in.
Sometimes money just can’t buy what they don’t have.
Oh, and bring your own Oreos, they’re 9 dollars U.S. a package.

Ah…. Thought you put a water maker in. My bad.
Speaking of which before someone gets too many ideas. It takes about 5hp to make a 1000 psi at 4.5 gpm. It also takes 5hp to make (forgot exact figure) 80-100 amps.
So no you can’t charge batteries while your making water.
      Just physics.
