SpectatorI was checking out my alternator and I was wondering if any of your W58 owners have high output alternators and if so which ones have you been happy with.
Thanks,

ParticipantGood morning Patrick-
Actually, we have two HD alternators, a 100 amp Balmar replacing the original, and a 120 amp Ample Power where the refrigeration compressor used to be. One VR drives them both. Two smaller alternators are much cheaper than one big one. Two pulling in approximately opposite directions minimizes side loading on the engine.
It works well. We have seen 140 amps into partly depleted bank of 8 GC batteries, not really stressing either alternator. Pretty good redundancy esp. since we have another similar VR driving the alternator on the Kubota which is a simple change the plug exchange.
A few problems to avoid. Original alternator bracket on the W-58 is barely robust enough for the bigger load. The bolts are not. Replace them with grade 5 or 8 bolts. Do not use stainless, they will break. Watch the wiring harness harness that they give you with Balmar. It is not marine quality and connections will corrode and break, esp. at alternator. Use heavy power and ground cables and run them directly to battery bank.
About the only thing I’d do differently is use slightly bigger pulleys on the alternators. We used 2″ with double belts. I wanted to be able to spin the alternators pretty fast at idle, but 2.5″ or 3″ would work fine and be easier on the belts.

ParticipantSo glad you asked…
I have two of the high output Ample Power PT-24 (aka 4024) 136 Amp
alternators left over from my engine swap out. One is an unused spare.
Both have double belt pulleys. Also have some extra brushes and
bearings to go with these. What is nice about these, besides the output
and the fact that they are direct “drop-ins” for the original
alternator, is that they use standard Delco cases so they are recognized
anywhere and the parts, like bearings, are cheap if you ever need them.
I wish I could use these on my new Beta but the foot conversion (new
case) and pulley swap out is just not worthwhile. Here is the website:
http://www.amplepower.com/products/alternators/index.html These sell
for $549 new. Contact me directly and make me an offer I can’t
refuse… BTW, I love the Ample Power stuff. I have two of their smart
regulators; one for the engine alternator and one to control my 6HP
scuba compressor/12V generator with 200 AMP alternator (which is
physically way too big for the W-58.Pete

That was the regulator that you got the model number from.

ParticipantA multi-step alternator regulator (like those from Ample Power) with a
large alternator makes all the difference. Alternators with built-in
regulators just don’t optimize the charging of large battery banks and
don’t optimize to battery type. The “Living on 12-Volts With Ample Power” is worth reading. Also, the
Ample Power website has links to many articles which basically cover the
crux of that book. http://www.amplepower.com/tech_docs/index.htmlPete

Several years ago I added a Behr 150 amp alternator to my 58–with two belts. It was dedicated to the house bank of four flooded golf cart batteries and the windlass battery. The old automotive alternator was then dedicated to my 8D starting battery. These two worked well to keep all our batteries charged up with engine running time limited mostly to that needed to anchor at night and weigh in the morning. I also had a Xantrax 40 amp shore power smart charger which I used to “equalize,” i.e., de-sulfate the batteries once a month.

ParticipantYou should replace it with a heavy duty 100 amp (at least – if you only have one belt) and a 3 stage external regulator.
