      Hello all-
Last winter, I was fortunate to find another W-58 locally on EBay, at a good price. My first intention was just as a parts engine, but it looks good enough to be redone as a back up engine. It is a 1982 engine, probably from a P-424. A tag had the name Sullivan. The engine has little internal wear, but was carboned up, and the cooling system, especially around the circulation pump and t-stat, was clogged up, leaking and overheated.
Anyway, it has been interesting to take it apart. So far, I’ve pretty much disassembled it, and rebuilt some parts, mainly the pumps, and found sources for some parts like gaskets and pump bearings.
One thing that is a problem is finding a source for pump seals. I can’t find anyone on the Internet who will sell small quanties for the raw water pump or the circulation pump. Anyone out there have a source other than Westerbeke or pump companies? Those guys want ten times the real value.
The W-58 is apparently based on the Mazda XA industrial engine (has “XA” cast into the block) but probably built by Perkins. The Mazda gaskets do not fit the W-58, so Perkins changed it a bit. It also has two more head bolts than the picture in the Westerbeke Technical manual.

Whenever I have needed seals for pumps, I just go to the nearest bearing
shop. They can measure uff the old ones or take the measurements off the
pump and for around $10 each, you should be all set.

Have you tried just taking the seals down to a local bearing shop and
asking them to match them up? I found all the seals and bearings for my
pumps (and alternator) that way at good prices.

      Paul/Pete-
Thanks for the reply and advice. I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out a bearing shop. There seems to be nothing local to Baltimore/Washington DC. The only sources I can find are Internet, and they only do bearings. Pump guys are just as much as Westerbeke. Can you recommend a specific source?
      Thanks,
      Quent

You need to be asking for oil seals. The last ones I got for the Johnson
pump on my genset were JM Clipper Oil Seals. Here is the parent company that
sell them on-line. I see the ones I got only cost $1.70 each ( This was for
      a small seal 12mm x 24 mm x 7 mm)

Just enter in the shaft and bore size in the search engine and you should
find what you want. You will need to know if metric or english units are
      being used for you pump.

Just google “bearings Baltimore” and you will find plenty of shops. Any
town over about 30,000 population will have a bearing shop, often
disguising itself as an “industrial supply” Great place to get hose,
belts, pulleys, bearings, seals, special lubricants, etc.

The seals in both pumps are “mechanical seals” which resemble small versions of the packless versions of propeller shaft seals like Lasdrop and PYI. They have a seal and a seat that rotate face to face, with a spring to push them together. I’m reluctant to substitute an oil seal design since either pump can incapacitate the engine if water reaches the bearings. I’m still having no luck finding a local source, at least local enough with almost $4 gas!
McMaster-Carr sells a $9.50 seal that looks like it might fit the RW pump if I use the old spring. I ordered a couple and will report back when I get and try them.

I didn’t realize the pump had mechanical seals. As Peter indicated, a shop
like Applied Industrial should have what you need. They have 3 shops in the
Baltimore area, so one may be close by.

Thanks, Paul. There is a store 17 miles away. Some of the seals look very close to what we need. I’ll try them after the McMaster-Carr seals arrive, and report back.
