We are coming close to closing on our 1980 424 ketch. The boat has a Westerbeke 58hp with 2500 hours. I’ve only dealt with the Yanmar that came new with our other boat. Questions:

Is this a reasonable hour usage for the engine or are we coming close to major refit? What is considered a “high” hours total on this engine?

      Thanks

I dunno, I have somewhere north of 7000 on our 60. It’s tired, and repairs are expensive, but it still runs pretty good. I think the 60 was discontinued b4 the 58, so your parts may be more resonable.

4000+ and she purrs like a kitten (and belches and wheezes and spits and produces the occasional unidentifiable but quite intriguing flatus).

5,365.3 hours and runs good. Change oil at 100 hrs or less + good Racors fuel filters.

Our baby just turned over 3000 this past wkend. We still love her. She
works much better now that we replaced the starting battery

I could swear, however, that WB 58’s were 60 HP and the WB 60’s were 56
      HP..

What is the hull number of this boat?

Mine has 400 hrs on it…. 200 when I bought it (new
Tach). I bet it really has over 8000 hrs on it. In the
spring, after sitting all winter, just turns right
      over and starts up.

Cant comment on the W-58 but our W-60 is still providing good service in our 1980 Ketch at 6000+ hours. Produces a fair amount of blue smoke on start up for about a minute or so but keeps on trucking.

Generally speaking, an normally aspirated diesel should last about 9000-10,000 hours between major rebuild. Turbo, half that. Do an oil check (I forget the website) and check for smoke – the W68 may produce gray steam on normal running (actually any diesel might) – no white or black smoke.

When I acquired my 1982 Ketch six years ago, records on engine use were skimpy and that difficult to reach metal pipe that runs fresh water about 6 inches on the aft side had developed a pinhole. I rebuilt all the accessories and overhauled the engine, and it has purred sweetly ever since. I did have a starter problem once but it was resolved. I felt comfy knowing there were no surprises coming and I had a leg on the condition of everything from accessories to rings.

About 1500 hours on our 1981 W-58. She runs fine, starts easy but we replaced the exhaust manifold and upper and lower t-stat housings. They were aluminum and went bad because PO didn’t replace antifreeze often enough. !980 is early for a w-58 in a P-424. Suggest you contact Westerbeke by e-mail with engine serial number. They can tell you if it is original to hull.

Thanks for the reassuring backup info. The 1980 424’s hull number is 135. I will do the engine oil analysis and also contact Westerbeke to find out if the engine is original.

2500 hours isn’t much for a diesel. There are a number of things in the power train that are more related to age than hours of use however. The fuel tank and V-drive may be near the end of their expected life. Engine accessories such as starter, alternator, and transmission may need service. Injectors may need to be rebuilt. The main thing is how expensive are replacement parts for this particular engine. I understand that the engine is still in production in one form or another so parts must still be available.
