ParticipantHi Guys
I have an engine problem on my trusty (or crusty) ‘ole Westerbeke. One of the head bolts is seeping oil around the top of the bolt. I’ve heard everything from I have a blown head gasket to I just need to re torque the head. Anybody experienced this?
Many Thanks/ JackCalico Jack

Jack;
I have been trying to rebuild the head on a W63C for the last year after I dropped the exhaust valve in the #1 cylinder. I had to go to China for a replacement cylinder head. So far I have had the head totally rebuilt and have installed the head three times. I am getting close to having it done (maybe???).
You can try to re-torque the cylinder head bolts, but I suggest that you follow the tightening pattern required for the head. A service manual for your engine may be available from Westerbeke web site for free (believe it or not) or any trusty engine mechanic will explain the required pattern of tightening. I would also recommend re-tightening all head bolts. You MUST use a calibrated torque wrench to re-torque the head bolts. The torque specifications will be in the service manual (about 85 ft-lbs).
If this does not work, theny you will have to replace the head gasket. You could do this yourself if you have the proper skill set and tools or a diesel mechanic will be required. If it is an old engine then you might also have the head re-built.
Good luck
Steve
