When I pull this giant engine and move it forward to remove the fuel tank, can I rest it on it’s belly (oil pan) or do I need to block under the engine mounts to prevent tragedy?

You should be able to put two lengths of 4 x 4’s under the mounts for it to
      sit on.

You probably should block it, but I have a spare one in the garage that has been sitting on its belly for over a year. It has even been run that way. But without a spare, if you did crack it finding a replacement might be a problem.

I would support on the mounts with some 4x4s

I used refrigerator rollers, available at most home goods stores. I lifted the engine using a cable winch and slid 2×6 boards under the engine mounts. Used the rollers to slide the engine forward and out of the way. Under no circumstances shuold the engine sit on its pan.

Thx fellows. I am going with the general gist, that being, “under no circumstances,” rest the big girl on her belly.

Now that I think of it, the engine rode here on its own pan all the way from Virginia to Boston in the back of a commercial pick up truck, and I don’t know what treatment it got being moved from the yard to a friend’s garage for storage while awaiting transport here. The guy who did move it into the truck and brought it here is kind of a roughneck so it probably got slammed around some. So if you do have to rest it on the pan, if I were you, I wouldn’t get too alarmed.
