I had disconnected the forepeak sink a few years ago when I was ‘glassing
closed a bunch of the original thru-hull holes in my boat. So that sink was
just wasting counter space on what has been Silver Heels’ workbench ever
since I began her refit. Meanwhile, I’ve had a few toolboxes living on the
forward berth in port and wedged into the forepeak’s “V” cabin sole space
underway. That sucked, but I needed the tools and had no place else to put
them.Well, I finally got around to doing something about it. Check out the
attached photos. It’s not fancy – hey, it’s a tool locker & workbench – but
I’m thrilled with the result. All my tools and toolboxes finally have a
home, and I have a much wider workbench. The tool bin is just an open shelf
in there. (The photos only show the frames I put in, prior to shelving over,
and then the finished & filled locker.) I used the toolboxes themselves,
locked in place with wood stopper cleats, to partition the space.I doubt this will be of much interest to 424 owners who sail close to home –
you may need to accommodate more guests than tools – but for long-term
cruisers who have to carry a lot more tools on board and sure don’t need a
third sink in their boat, this alteration may be worth considering.Tor

ModeratorThat’s very cool, Tor. I may have to move to the aft cabin so I can have a
workbench that doesn’t include my knees and a board. That’s an excellent
use of space!Bob

Hey Bob,
Yes, a workbench on a cruising boat is a many splendored thing. On Silver
Heels, all the other lockers and drawers in that space, as well as the port
& starboard shelves above the V-berth, are full of tools and related
paraphernalia. That might cramp the quarters for living. Still, the
starboard lockers can be used for clothing and other personal effects if you
prefer sleeping up there. There are roughly equal pros & cons for sleeping
forward and aft in the boat (except you’d obviously want to sleep aft
underway).Note the most important tool, the manual beer can crusher, visible in photo
#5. Can’t go cruising without one of those. In fact, it’s now 1700 hrs. here
in Panama. Time to put that sucker to good use.Tor
