SpectatorAccording to the comments it was a broken mooring and a storm. The boat was a total loss.
You can see the pieces here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clShxWA3gho-p

ParticipantI hate to look like a vulture, but does anyone know the owner of this boat. I believe she’s in Lahaina (Maui) and I might pay to pick her bones for spares.

ParticipantI’ll be back on board Lady Leanne the first week of December through the end of January. I’ll try to contact the owner and make a jump over to Maui if possible to check out what (if anything) is left.
As we circle the carcass, it’s important to remember what the locals call the “Paradise Tax”, which is the high cost of shipping anything to/from Hawai’i.

ParticipantBob-
You may prefer manual, but I have had 2 Pearsons now with electric windlasses with zero problems in 25 years. First was an Ideal windlass on the Pearson 365 that I cruised south for a year as a liveaboard, and the second, a Maxwell 1200 vertical, is currently on my 424 for over 14 years.
I think that as long as the windlass motor is somewhat protected from salt water you will be all right. This is one of the reasons I chose to use vertical windlasses– the motor and electric hookup are all below decks! Also, whatever style windlass, vertical, horizontal, manual, or electric, be sure to cover the unit with a sunbrella cover. This will go a long way to adding life to the unit.

My Lawrence Lion burned up the day I bought the boat nine years ago. I then installed (pics on the website) a Lewmar 1500 electric. Smartest thing I ever did. I put red LED’s on the deck in the circuit so I’d know if it was on or not. Saved many a trip below, and saved many a battery. I can just about single hand the boat with that windlass. I put a “guy” wire rope on the end of the chain to twist the anchor in to position as she rolls on up. I have two foot switches up front, a remote in the back. Why would you ever want a manual ?

ParticipantThatcher-
Read with interest your use of a “guy wire” to get the anchor in the correct position for hauling. Could you tell us more about this and perhaps a picture??
Thanks.

No pic till next season.
Essentially a line, beginning from the twisting circulating side (one not both) of the anchor bolt attachment to the chain, to a spot up the chain. When the line comes aboard you undo the square knot and then pull the anchor in the correct position to come up the roller facing the way you want.

ParticipantAnyone have a diesel heater on your 424? (that is a heater that runs on
diesel fuel, not a heater for your diesel fuel). What lessons, advice, recommendations do you have?
Thanks,

Pete,
I have a Dickenson. It works well, and I turned it on just once and made a vow to never ever need it. Spent all my time in the Bahamas and Caribbean after that one experience with it while in Beaufort, NC.
Enjoy the beautiful waters of the Bahamas and the Grenadines….like no other.
That’s the only lesson, advice, and recommendation I can possibly think of.Joe,

On Easy Reach I use a boast hook to turn our 60# CQR into position so it goes over the roller smoothly. We have an ancient simpson-Lawrence, continualy esxposed to salt water and it has never failed in ten years including two in the wetern Caribbean (Central America).
