Anyone ever repower a 424 with a Beta Marine Engine (Kubota)?? If so, what HP engine was used? 43HP, 50HP, or 60HP?

This is a little old but I’m going to reply anyway.

    Steve,
I repowered my P424 hull 18 with a Beta 60 and we are very happy. The experience was marred only by the dealer, Joe Demers of sound marine diesel. Dealing with Joe, after he had my money, was the single worst large purchase experience of my adult life. The engine on the other hand has been a dream.
I installed the engine myself and have had no problems. It is a bit smaller in size than the W60, quieter and uses a bit less fuel. I ordered the bobtail and installed a velvet drive transmission. The installation was very straight forward. Stanley at Beta Marine NC is a great person to talk with before you purchase.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi All,
I’m trying to get a quote for Standing Rigging on a P424 Ketch, including (SSB antenna/insulators) from RiggingOnly.com. They don’t have any records of the specs for a P424 ketch, but said if I get a couple names/dates of people they’ve provided rigging to, they can give me a pretty accurate quote.

Of course, I’ll still have to measure my actual rig, to ensure the rig is right for this vessel.

I’d appreciate if anyone could give me their name and approx date of re-rig. Also, what your general feelings about using RiggingOnly.com was. Did you think you saved alot? did you install and/or tune the rig yourself? If you used someone else, do you still think ordering the rigging was a cost saver? Any other insight you might provide would be greatly appreciated.

    thank you,

    Paul

    Hello Paul,
I replaced the rigging on my main mast (minus forestay) March 2012 through riggingonly.com. $3300.00 with three insulators on the back stay. Swaged uppers, stalok lowers. I love staloks.
Very satisfied with their customer service.
I ordered the rigging but did not install it until a couple of months later. The day we were going to step the mast I found the swaged uppers had the wrong diameter hole for the pins. I called them, they paid to ship the rigging back and had me new rigging in three days. Only a minor inconvenience. Very easy to work with and $1600 cheaper than local rigger. Sorry but $1600 is $1600.
    Very happy with riggingonly.com

We removed the engine and lifted it through the aft companionway, had about an inch to spare.

How did you get the fuel tank into the boat? Most of the other owners have
done two tanks so they didn’t need to cut out the cockpit floor.

We are in the middle of a refit and ordered a new fuel tank. Our original
tank was made in Massachusetts in 1977. I contacted the original mfg (still
in business) and they told me they sold their fuel tank division to Florida
Marine Tanks in the 80’s. FMT is pretty common knowledge I think, I just
wanted to share our experience. We went back and forth several times, with
FMT, regarding measurements and requirements. FMT was great to work with.
They told us it would take a minimum of four weeks, the tank showed up three
weeks later and it was perfect! The measurements were spot on. We added a
second pick up and return for the generator. We are really happy. Tank was
    $800 plus $125 freight.

Wow, thanks Paul. Maybe I’ll have someone NDT these and if they’re good I’ll reinstall the two twisted plates.

Here’s the link to a couple of pics:

One some of the earlier boats they twisted the forward chainplates so they would line up with the rig. Mine came out the same way and I thought they had been damaged underway. It wasn’t until I installed new straight ones that I realized they had been bent that way. When you install new plates, you will see that they don’t line up square with the slots in the hull. You can either redo the slots or build up the knee that they are attached to so they are square or have the new ones twisted to match. I chose to build up the knee with fiberglass to line them up properly.

On the later hulls, they didn’t bother twisting the chainplates, so they are not exactly lined up. You would never notice it unless you are looking for it.

Thanks Patrick. I was actually looking at your site before I posted this, yours look great. I’ll post my pictures to my site in the next day or two and you’ll see how twisted they are. One of them looks like a rotini noodle.
    Anyone else?
