ParticipantThanks very much for much for the suggestions Evan and Rick.
After I posted, I actually found a working version my exact windlass on eBay (seller asking $800, but if I can go brand new for the models you suggested at $1600-1700, that doesn’t seem like a bad deal.
My wife would like me to attempt to fix our current one, but not sure how that will go – it won’t drop the anchor now when I push forward the handle (so I have to manually pay out rode now), and although it works to pull the rode up, the case emits mild electric shocks…
Thanks again guys.

ParticipantLooks great. I like that you have separate back cushions so that you can access the storage more easily.

ParticipantEvan,
I’m very excited to see your hybrid system. I look forward to reading your posts about it as I’m a bit obsessed with the subject. The solar/electric dinghy I built has been my little test bench for electric propulsion.
Please do keep us updated on your conversion.

ParticipantWe just had to do this as well. I found this guy Hugo recommended on someone’s blog about marine insurance. I would give him a call. He was absolutely awesome with us.

ParticipantJosh & Lucy,
You got it. We had all new interior cushions made when we purchased her – a big investment, but boy does it make a difference in the feel of the interior. Her interior woodwork still needs some love – especially in our nav area. I believe that portlight that opens into the cockpit is original.
On the subject of electric power – I am a tad obsessed with renewable electric power. We actually have a solar-electric dinghy – I got too annoyed with my gas outboard.
I would love a clean, low maintenance electric motor on Juniper, however I looked into this pretty extensively and found that for the speed (6+ knots) and range I would like to have (a few hundred miles), I would need an incredible amount of batteries on the boat. Your needs may be different, but our diesel tank provides something over 400 mi of range at 6 knots. I don’t believe you will find an electric system priced similarly to a new motor that provides that… yet. If you do, tell us!

All the best,
Ryan and Kathleen

ParticipantThe big advantages I can see that the two companionway layout has over ours is the separate shower stall (although there is only one head), and the more open aft berth. I like having the two heads for privacy with guests, however our aft berth feels more cramped with the wall next to the companionway.
It’s all a trade off it seems.

ParticipantHi everyone,
We just wanted to chime in as we are hull 206 (1983 424 original ketch) and we have the same layout. I have pasted links to photos of our interior.
Josh – Congrats on the new boat. You’ll love it. As far as a repower – We have a Westerbeke 58 from 1991 and the original Walter v-drive. From my cursory research it appears Beta Marine makes a nice drop-in motor for our boat.

ParticipantSmall world
We recently saw Painkiller anchored a few boats away in Bequia. I was on a bareboat charter with my wife and some friends. As we sailed by we said “that’s a 424!”.
She’s a beautiful boat in person 🙂

ParticipantMy wife and I have considered this as well. I would love to hear about anyone’s experience with an electric motor on a P424.

ParticipantHi Rick,I don’t have experience doing this with either product you mention, but I just wanted to warn you about Interlux Interdeck in case you consider it. I painted the non skid deck areas of my old boat with that. It creates a great super-fine non-skid surface, however the downside is that the fine grit quickly gathered dirt and pollen that was very difficult to remove from the areas. If I did it again, I would go with a rougher grit. The products you’re considering may be rougher than the Interdeck, but I’m not sure. Hope this is helpful.Good luck.Ryan Doyle
ParticipantHi David,
Thanks so much. I wonder if my switch has the same reset at 160, because once the buzzer starts it does not stop. Maybe a SPDT switch is in order if I can’t get to the bottom of this.
Just odd because the engine doesn’t actually seem to be running above 180 according to my temp gauge and infrared thermometer.
Cheers,
Ryan-

ParticipantThanks very much Rich. Yeah, these 1″ pendants and thimbles I ordered are just enormous. Seem like they’re for the Titanic.I’ll look into 3/4″ ones at 12′ and 14′. That should actually be perfect.Appreciate the help.RyanRyan Doyle
