Hi Tor and Bill. I am trying to join the mail group, but so far unsuccessful. I can’t see the pic of our boats in Big Majors on the website, of course, until the new site is up. SO, could you sent the pic to me personally, I’d love to print it and frame it. Email is: isbound@aol.com. Thanks, cindy

I’d be happy to send boat pics but I can only send via email at this point, until the new website forum is working. I haven’t been able to join the mailing list. Tor took a great pic from a hill of 4 424’s in Big Majors a few years ago. Maybe he’ll post it. Thanks again, Cindy

Ewan, I think all the things you listed are great. I just wanted a way to add pics to the forum, but now that we are going down this new road I thing it’s great! About time it was updated. The member list is really out of date. Probably because some members don’t update it. Some are deceased, some boats sold, etc. regarding pay pal donations, I think some compensation for your time is appropriate, however it would be nice to have a way to monitor how much is donated. Could you tell us a bit about yourself? I may have missed it. How long have you owned your 424? What state do you live in? Anything else you feel like adding? Thanks, Cindy

Not sure who the administrator is, evanoleary? But good news the forum will be updated to add pics! Member list could use some updating also. Thanks. I tried to join the email list yesterday but so far have been unable to. I was on the email list when I first bought my 424 in 1999, but found getting 5-15 emails a day not to my preferences. Much nicer to just check the forum when I want and go to a subject of interest. Thanks everybody for the input! Regards, Cindy

I went into FAQ on this website and read thru it all. Pictures are not allowed! Just attachments of 700kbs. Only way to post pics are thru individual’s personal website, which I don’t have. Sure would be nice if the administrator could change this. Lots of 424 owners don’t have web sites. John, I assume Tor could see your pics because you sent him a personal e mail. Regards, Cindy Stein

Hi John. I don’t see your pics. I have an iPad and iPhone and use the pics from my library. Get a message from 424 site that one can only use pics up to 700 Kbps. The 3 pics I wanted to post total 3.5 mb. Thanks for trying, Cindy

Hi David, I just checked your web site and found I was mistaken in where you live. Since you are in NW Florida and not New England the Kubota martinized by Phasor in Pompano might work for you. It’s a slower turning engine than the Yanmar and also naturally aspirated. The Beta people call it a Beta 60. My mechanic who did the installation knew Martin who does the marinization for Phasor. This helped a lot as we went to the factory several times to check on the progress of my new engine. Martin welded new supports to fit my stringers. I am sure he remembers my installation so he would be familiar with your boat. Regards, Cindy

Hi David. Sorry to hear about your engine. Last time we e mailed it was about AC, which I am still working on. I’ll chime in with my 2 cents worth of advice regarding w58. I had a W60 in my Hull #31 1978 which had been rebuilt when I bought the boat in 1999. After about 5 years I was replacing parts on every cruise. Got to the point where I was spending a lot of money on an obsolete engine that was getting really hard to find parts for. 7 years ago while in the Bahamas it started making a lot more noise. On return from that cruise back to Ft Lauderdale I found a mechanic I liked who would do a replacement for me. I had looked at the Kubota which is martinized by Phasor in Pompano, not far from my home base. I know the W58 is a different engine than my old W60. The Kubota 60 was an almost exact replacement regarding torque and RPM for the W60. I wanted a slower turning engine than the Yanmar. When the mechanic took the old engine out he said my damper plate was totally shot. He couldn’t believe I made it up the river! All the springs had let go, so that was my noise. I love my Kubota. Might not be as easy to replace with a Kubota for you since you are up in the NE somewhere. I wrote several articles in the forum back in June- sept 2009 about the installation. If you are interested in my installation I can tell you more. Regards and good luck, Cindy

Thanks David for posting the AC pics on your website. Whow, those vents are really large in the main saloon and aft cabin. I can see why the v doesn’t get cool. I would think the aft stateroom freezes you out with that 8 or 10″ vent blowing over the bed. I also liked your sink install. Did you put in the coriander counter? It looks real nice! Regards, Cindy

Hi Ewan, have you purchased the Lewmar hatches? If not Bomar offers the same hatches Pearson originally used as a special order. I replaced mine earlier this year. Regards, Cindy

Hi David. What kind of boat do you have? I don’t see how your AC setup would even be possible on my P 424 hull 31. Maybe you have a 422? Thanks, Cindy

Sorry Rick, I called you Steve. I found the old conversations re AC in 2009 by doing a search on this forum. Sounds like John is correct that a good installation needs straight, short duct runs of the proper size. The AC guy and I both looked at the space behind the stb settees. We didn’t like the idea of drilling 6″ holes. That’s why we gave up, for now, having a vent in the fwd cabin. If I ever need more cooling in the V berth a small separate unit may work…..Marine Air (dometic) specs call for 6″ ducts for the 12,000 btu unit and 7″ for the 16,000 btu unit. I would rather have good cooling in the main saloon and aft cabin where I sleep….also, AC amps is a consideration. The 12,000 btu unit uses 8.7amp in cool and 10.9 amp in heat mode. The 16,000btu uses 10.4 in cool and 13.6 in heat and would require a 40amp breaker, which would put me over the top for one 50amp shore cord……Tor, I tried the window unit overhead in the main saloon and it cooled only the main saloon and not the V or aft cabin. 8,000 btu window unit works great sitting in the aft companionway blowing straight thru the boat. Regards, Cindy

Thanks to John and Steve for their thoughts. I had a frig guy come by yesterday and he suggested one 12,000 btu marine air (dometic) self contained turbo unit mounted on a shelf just aft of the door in the stb midship locker. One vent pointed straight out toward the galley and another vent in the same locker but facing forward above the aft end of the stb saloon cushions. The third would have ducting going thru the head behind the sink lockers, thru the back of the shower (I have a large access hatch above the seat. There is a ton is space behind the shower stall) and out at the nav station facing the port side. I sleep in the aft stateroom, and I’m not too worried about the fwd stateroom at this time. The vent facing fwd in the main saloon may pump some air into the forward stateroom. Dometic came up with a new self contained unit design in 2007 with a turbo fan which may be more efficient than the older units. My window AC sits in the aft companionway and cools the whole boat nicely with 8,000btu. This probably works as the air blows thru the whole boat. I was in Ft Lauderdale and am now in Ft Pierce so it does get hot here! I’m still wondering if 12,000 btu will cool the boat enough. I guess I’ll find out. Anyone else feel like chiming in feel free. Regards, Cindy S/V Island Bound
