ParticipantWell, John, I guess it’s a whole new e-world now. Here, within a couple of hours of my query and on a Sunday!, no less, is Roger’s reply:

Dear Tor,
Thanks for the e-mail and for your interest in Bristol Bronze. We do not presently make the drain plug that you are looking for, however we probably could. You would need to supply us an original, in any metal, to use as a master. I agree with you about the stuff on the market today. It is usually made from scrap alloy 360 brass and cast in S.E. Asia.

So there you have it. I’m not looking for a custom made piece, but I certainly do appreciate Roger’s personal and nearly instant reply.Tor

ParticipantThanks, Pete. I had a teak shower grate in my last boat. It was difficult to clean. I’m thinking plastic will be easier. Cheaper, too. This is more for function than decor.

ParticipantThanks, Don. West Marine (Port Supply) sells a bronze Perko plug that seems suitable. No idea where it’s manufactured, though. I suppose I could ask Perko.

ParticipantQuent,
That’s an excellent approach, but time-consuming. I’m at the tail end of 2+ years refitting this good old boat and, while I’ve enjoyed it immensely, I’m ready to go sailing now. I can make a shower pan grate from some prefab mesh material, framed, fitted, functional and presentable, in a half-day or less. Don’t think I’m patient enough right now to build a second, properly finished fiberglass floor from scratch. Thanks for the perfectly sound suggestion, though.

ParticipantThanks very much, Bob. That does look like the right stuff. If I don’t make something from milk crates (or a WalMart shopping cart), I’ll give them a call.

ParticipantLinus,
By bread rack do you mean a tray or shelf of heavy, coated wire? Where do you suppose one might find/buy such a thing?

ParticipantThanks, Paul. I should’ve mentioned that my idea is to raise the grid 2″ off the shower floor so the water can accumulate beneath it in between pump-outs, keeping my feet out of it. This Dri-Dek appears to be too flexible for that. A rigid grate mounted on a starboard supporting border and maybe a center support block is what I’m aiming for. As I said earlier, the plastic grid of a milk crate seems about right. Hmmm, maybe I could cut up a milk crate and use the side sections…

ParticipantBob,
I’d rather avoid wood in there. Any idea where one might find the commercial plastic grates?

ParticipantAh, but does a 4″ column of Cruzan rum exert the same force as a quart of Mount Gay? This is the question that has plagued Caribbean sailors since the days of yore, or at least since April Fool’s Day.

ParticipantRight. For vintage boats like ours they all want a complete dry-dock survey. Scratch one more boat unit.

ParticipantJohn,
Here are three agencies that will cover offshore cruising. Be sure you’re sitting down when they quote you a price.
