ParticipantJohn,
I saw a talk that Al Golden gave to the Seven Seas Assoc.
Long time sailor.. crossed oceans etc.. Seems to be very knowledgeable..
You might want to talk to him about the options/cost…

ParticipantRock,
There is a great YouTube video on redoing a galley which includes step by step instructions on how to remove and replace the counter top..

Hope it helps and good luck..

ParticipantRich,
Sorry to butt into your chain plate discussion but, I just saw your pictures.
Since you have a large area exposed it might be a good idea to put insulating in while you have easy access.
I insulated my last sailboat using the foil bubble wrap and it made a huge difference.
It was inexpensive and easy to work with and cut to fit…
I used 3M spray adhesive, it also was easy to work with (works like contact cement).
In my case I used gray outdoor carpet also glued over the liner (also with 3M spray on adhesive) and it also came out great with a clean neat appearance.
An additional benefit was the reduction in noise from both inside and outside of the boat..
Sold the boat 5 years later and never a separation and worked well in Florida..
Just a thought.

ParticipantAll good ideas..
Leaving it open would be the easiest but I can just see all the stuff that would grow in there and how hard that would be to keep or get clean when in the water..
My first idea was to use closed cell foam glued in with fairing compound or 3M 4200 and close over the top of that with more fairing compound.. I want to make sure that it is as water tight as I can make it..
Not sure what to do yet.. slow thinker I guess..
I need to find something that will cut thru the waxy substance left behind and I think I should thoroughly clean up, not only the fiberglass area, but also the strut it’s self before I proceed further..
Also, I am worried about the strut not having a zinc mounted on it… but it does not seem to have very much damage to it as it is after all these years..
My last boat had a zinc mounted on the strut but a walk around the boat yard only revealed that some sail boats had zincs but most did not?
I assume the strut it bounded inside as I can not seem to find the strut bolts in the bilge to verify this..
Your thoughts are very encouraging..
Thanks for the support..John

ParticipantI think what Eric said would be the place to start.
My locker also has two vents.. one at the bottom and one at the top.
That permits fresh air to enter at the top and any gas (heaver than air) to flow out of the bottom.
Both go out thru the transom. Easy enough to pour warn soapy water in the locker and thru the top vent and look for the flow out thru the transom or leaking water in the lines in the locker.
Good luck..

ParticipantThat looks super.. I am thinking of modifying the patricians to get them in..
Need to make sure that they are not providing any needed structural support to the hull.. Thoughts?John

ParticipantAlan,
Let me know what you find out.. I have a total of 4 d size, 2 of which are in my port cockpit locker that are completely blocking 2 of my sea cocks and I want to move them as well.
They would be perfect under the aft berth but am not sure they would fit and how to deal with the ventilation.
Thanks..
