Hi Rob, those dimensions are exactly what I took off my tank when I removed it. Funny thing though … “my” baffle ran athwartships. I know because I replaced the bottom of the tank for a cost of $300 saving at least $700 with shipping a new one etc.

Rich, the “tool” is called a nipple wrench. It's a plumbers tool. If you google it I'm sure one will come up. Without it you can find a piece of steel or whatever and cut or grind it to the inside dia. of the thru-hull and make it long enough to insert and catch hold of the two small tangs that are in the thru-hull. Put an adjustable wrench on the steel plate (or whatever) and a big “monkey” wrench on the inside at the sea cock and you should have problem. Mine actually came out too easy, one of them without even having a wrench on the inside. Scared the bejesus out of me how little was holding them in for all those years.  Sorry for the big picture, haven't worked that shit out yet. I feel everyone who “hasn't” removed seacocks should be aware of what I found. This is the aft deck scupper seacock and thru-hull. The one located right under the captains bed. See the brown on the threads? That's it, that was all that was holding it in. Count them …two and one half threads. Check your old thru-hulls!!!!!!!!

Scott, not sure what those backing plates look like because when I redid my thru-ulls there was no backing plates and no bolts. Only 2 1/2 to 4 full threads on the thru-hull entered the sea cocks. If they are anything like the backing plates for the stanchion bases, (fiberglass pads) I'd imagine with new bolts you'll get a safe 30 or 40 years out of them.

My brain is designing a stern platform at this time, but I have no concrete description to share at this time.  It will fold up and it will have a swim ladder.

I'd suggest checking all the bolts that hold it down and for alignment. I had a similar big vibration problem and saw that some mounting bolts had backed out. I realigned added new lock washers and all is fine.

Thanks Tor, I gave it an hour or so trying to figure it out on my own, I might have got close and I definitely learned “something” (them are BIG pictures) but I'll have to find a teenager.

Yup, getting WAY too many emails here too. Would love it if the site could make it possible to only receive emails notices of “new subjects” and not all the other correspondence that come after.

I have to agree, I paid a tad higher in the cost range of these old girls and still had to put many of “my hours” doing professional jobs for no pay. But my cash outward was very small.  I am grateful the previous owner did all that he did. Some things he did not so much but all in all when I sell this boat someone's going to get a boat that needs not a lot of money, just a wallet full of love for maintenance and gadgets, if that's your thing.

    Hi Dan,
If the shutoff valve is frozen you really should deal with that, it’s pretty darn important. I’d recommend you disconnect the fuel line at the tank top then you can deal with any fuel left in the lines without fear of siphoning. You might want to try a small pair of vise grips on the body part of that valve handle along with an adjustable wrench on the finger part together slowly working it back and forth, after you disconnect the line at the tank of course just in case it fails to loosen and has to be replaced with a new one.

PFSChey, this is why I’m not so keen on using the mailing list. Others are comfortable getting every email or comment in their inbox, I’d rather just go to the site at my convenience and then see what’s new. I’m still getting the emails but I might want only to get “new topic” notifications if that’s possible (Ewan?).

You might want to just unsubscribe from the email notifications. But I’m certainly not the guy to ask “how” (Ewan?).

I used a length of 1/4″ clear hose and set up my jug down in between the engine beds, well below the bottom of the fuel tank. Then I sucked on the hose till I saw the diesel far enough in the hose but not too close to my mouth and siphoned the bottom out. I never tasted the diesel, but I'd understand if that's not the way you want to do it. I'm just still a bit of a caveman.

Hi Ewan, if it helps at all, I will be always posting from the Pearson 424 site. I know a lot of the guys use the email and I too had gone that route but I am much more comfortable using the site you re-built. Everything I do or try will be from the site and any issues I have I’ll let you know as best I can in computer language (gawd help me)

Thanks for that picture Rob, it clears up a little mystery for me. My V-Drive top cover has a bunch of goop that the PO applied but never cleaned, it’s never leaked so I’ve left it alone but was curious. My PO put a 3/8″ pencil zinc in that space, it’s in the plug at the lower right of your picture. I check it regularly and as I remember the first few months aboard it seemed to do it’s job, (corrode) rather slowly. I think it was about a year maybe a little more before I replaced it. Since then the zinc comes out almost looking “rusted” and with no corrosion that I can tell. Not sure what’s happening there. Does anyone have any ideas? I might re-bed the cover and take a good look to see if any excessive corrosion is taking place. Yours doesn’t look that bad to me but I’d might take a semi sharp object and poke a little, gently, where the others have mentioned it breaking through.
