ParticipantHey John,
Not sure what an “inboard” sink is, or where an “outboard” sink would be. (Overboard, maybe?) Attached is a photo of my now-9-year-old upgrade for the galley sink elbows, PVC pieces with the necessary screw cap fitting that I almost certainly got at Home Depot. Silverheels’ forepeak sink was long ago replaced with deep tool storage for my work bench there. The head sink’s version of an elbow is surely original, brass (or bronze?) seemingly brazed onto the bottom of the sink’s threaded drain tube and bent about 75-degrees towards the thru-hull. Once you’ve cut the brazed brass off the sink drain tube, if you can’t find a matching PVC elbow with the right size screw-on fitting, you might instead just clamp on a length of hose with an I.D. equal to the O.D. of the drain tube. Your sink will then have a nice, wide, smoothly-curved drain to the thru-hull instead of the skinny, bent tube Pearson put on there, which is prone to clogging.
Have fun,
Tor

ParticipantHi Dan,
If that’s all you have to pump out, why not just removed the sight gauge thru the cockpit sole viewing port, run a hose down to the forward (lowest) end of the tank, and sump out the fuel with practically any pump that can handle petroleum? When I bought Silverheels, I did that to pump out a couple of gallons from a fairly full tank just to be sure there wasn’t any water & sludge collected down there, since the boat has been sitting idle for a while. I used a $20 hand pump I bought at NAPA, I think, and pumped the fuel into a pail at first so I could see what was coming out. You’d need a few jerry jugs for 10-15 gallons.
K.I.S.S.,

ParticipantEwan,
I’d like to be signed up for all P424 emails. Apparently Iâm already in for General Discussion and Announcements (since I receive those), but not for For Sale (since I’ve not received any from there). How/where do I sign up for the 3rd forum?
Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantNever mind. My email just answered its own question. I received it back via the group forum. The photo itself was no longer attached, but a link in the email now leads to the photo on the website. I also see a thumbnail link for it on the website itself, beneath my “posted” message under your “Update on the Site: IMPORTANT” topic.
All clear.
Thanks,
Tor

Awesome, Ewan! So if I attach a photo, as I am doing now, does everyone who receives the group emails receive this photo? And/or, does it get posted somewhere on the website?
Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantExcellent, John! You can’t go wrong having multi-purpose gear and back-ups for the back-ups.

ParticipantIf I had a spare main halyard I don’t think I’d want to use it as my main boom topping lift – because then I wouldn’t have a spare halyard anymore. When I re-rigged Silverheels I pinned a wire, 3/16″ diameter I think, to the after side of the main masthead, its length about equal to the distance from the masthead down to the boom gooseneck, with a thimbled eye at the lower end. I shackled a small block to that eye, secured one end of strong 1/4″ line to the aft end of the boom, ran it up through the small block and back down to a cheek block on the starboard side of the boom’s after end, and from there forward to a cleat about 18″ abaft the gooseneck, also on the boom’s starboard side. This provides a simple, permanent topping lift, adjustable from the starboard mast pulpit. I also have one of those original Pearson wires off the front of the mizzen mast – no idea what its proper name is – which I use when I’m going to be in port for a while, slacking the main topping lift a little so the mizzen wire takes the boom’s weight. Not sure why I bother. Because it’s there, I guess.

ParticipantThanks very much, John. I’ll check it out, but I believe Iâm using Outlook 2010. I tend to lag behind on these programs.

ParticipantThank you for your concern, Ewan. If you read the email I just sent explaining how and why I use MS Outlook, I think you’ll understand why web-based additions won’t be all that useful to me. My system, my lifestyle, is geared to brief, sporadic Internet access. Right now I happen to have longer connectivity, but that is likely to end in a few months and I’ll be back to grabbing momentary signals when and where I can, the price of traveling freeform.
So in the long term, no, a thread link to a website won’t help me much since I’ll probably be offline by the time I read it.(It might, however, be a boon to other members!) If eventually you see a way for our emails to function as they used to, so that they include the previous message, I’ll be thrilled. Meanwhile, I’ll work with what is. You’ve got more important stuff to deal with right now.
Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantEwan,
I use MS Outlook, by far the most practical “client” – perhaps the only one, I don’t know – for people who travel a lot and only get online sporadically. It allows me to go online, download all incoming emails, send whatever’s in my outbox, and go offline again within a minute, all the newly received emails now held on my hard drive to be read and dealt with when convenient – offline. Canât imagine doing it any other way.
I guess I have preferred the email side of this forum because it has been so easy in the past. An email comes in with whatever it was responding to, so I can see at a glance what it’s about, decide whether or not I have anything to add to that conversation, and then drag it into my Pearson 424 Owners’ Group folder, my “archive.” It all takes seconds, which is often all I have time for. I enjoy this group and our discussions and don’t want to make it burdensome. If our emails can no longer include the previous message being replied to, then I’ll just be less tuned in to what’s being said and why. C’est la vie. I don’t expect you to tailor it to my needs. I’ll take what comes, do what I can, and still be grateful for your huge contributions.
Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantI understand, you’ve got your hands full.
I can see all my saved emails’ subjects, but can’t tell which one is being answered. I’ll live with it. Maybe later you’ll have time for some of the fine points.
Tor
ParticipantEwan,
Can you rig it so Reply emails like yours below retain the original message to which we’re replying? Otherwise, they’re often confusing because I don’t know or donât remember what they might be Replying to.

ParticipantI second that, Ewan. Please keep us informed enough to know when we need to kick in some more, so you don’t have to do the work AND foot the bill.

ParticipantI use an old laptop and an equally old nav program. That’s why I have all this loose money to throw around.
Seriously, let me know if the members wimp out. John and I will pick up some of the slack. Then we’ll be sure we never help out any of those scrooges again.
😉 (Just kidding!)
(Sort of)

ParticipantThanks, Ewan. That gives us an idea of what this is costing, i.e., about $1,200 this first year, give or take. That only amounts to $26.66 from each of us 45 logged-in members, but I suppose there may be one or two who can’t afford 25-bucks, having spent their last nickel on a new chart plotter. So, you 125 lurkers who read and maybe even sometimes write emails without going to the website (as I usually do), you know we benefit from this stuff, too, a lot more than $25-worth if we’re honest about it. So, fellow lurkers, let us too rise up and PayPal in our $25, just like the real 424-ers, and we’ll have this website & the soon-to-be-perfected emails funded for a good long while. C’mon guys & gals, pony up. This is a good thing we have. Do your part.
And while I’d hate to think any 424 owner would be so… frugal as to pass on this opportunity to share the cost of our website and information-sharing forum, well, I suppose it could happen. So to my fellow high-rollers & millionaires I would add that donating more than $25, as in $50 or even $100 if you can manage it, will guarantee that Ewan doesn’t get stuck for the cash costs when he’s already doing all the work for free.
Thank you all for being great people and keeping this going.
