About to undertake same so reviving this Zombie thread to ask a more specific question…
When glassing in a PVC pipe is there anything you have to do special to the PVC or will fiberglass readily adhere? Any other tips and tricks for this modification that aren’t obvious? Nervous about cutting such a big hole in the boat!

I looked at that boat. Did the owner replace the fuel tank or are you taking that on? It seemed to me that the boom was short for a sloop so I thought it might have been a ketch with the mizzen removed but the owner said it was always a sloop.

I liked the modification he did to the bilge, let me know how that works out long term.

Did you know the head was cracked when you bought the boat or was this an unplanned repower? If it was unplanned what caused the head to crack? I’m asking because currently in the market for a Pearson 424 and I’m not a fan of Westerbeke engines to start with so hearing about your experiacne is valuable.

When the engine was out did you look at the fuel tank?

Mine has steel tanks (2) that replaced the original single tank.
Not exactly sure why the PO did that but I would imagine it was MUCH easier to put two side-by-side smaller tanks in that amount to more capacity than one single one of the same or less capacity.

Generally when a PO splits the tankage in two like that it is so that the tanks can be removed via the cockpit locker hatches in the future. If you ever have to pull them out you might check to see if they come out that way before pulling the engine.

You should take a close look at the fuel tank. There is at least one 424 for sale that has a fuel tank that won’t hold fuel and you have to remove the engine to get at it. Aluminum tanks have a history of problems, so much so that the USCG released a safety circular regarding them…

Where is the ’79 Cutter? I’ve looked at most of them now in my searchand might have photos I can send you.

You can try searching her hull number here: https://cgmix.uscg.mil/PSIX/PSIXSearch.aspx

May turn up any old documentation.
