ParticipantHi Pete:
I’ve personally used these folks 3 or 4 times over the years. Excellent work every time. All three sails on my 424 were in fair condition at best. They came back white, restiched, and crisp as new. When I sent my sails in Dec of 2008 they were getting over 100 bags of sails a day. They’ve got the only sail machine in the free world. We recommend them to our clients all the time and I’ve never had a bad report.

ParticipantHi Quent: Small world! I work with Deatons, in fact I’ve been here 16 years. Myself and my partner (Rich Gahan) own the yacht brokerage end of things. The guy’s name is Linus that repowered with the Cummins. Ask Buddy Floyd our service manager, Linda McClain the secretary, or Gary Dale one of our mechanics. They’ll be able to give you some info on Linus’ old engine. I’ll catch up with you in a couple of days when I’m moving around.

ParticipantHi Quent: I’m having the dreaded knee surgery at 11:00 am tomorrow, something about old age! So much for me ever dancing with The Chipindales. My boat is across the bridge at Pecan Grove but I think it’s going to be about a week before I feel like moving around on deck. The free dock is pretty accessable during the week but it does get taken on the week ends. Don’t let the large cruise ship “Spirit of America” surprise you at the Oriental Marina. It’s been stopping several times during the year and arrived today. Again have a great time in our city!

ParticipantHi Quent: I live in Oriental and have the 424 “MOJO”. We have a very good anchorage just past the breakwater, good holding and there is a free dinghy dock. It gets a little crowded this time of year with folks going South. There are two Oriental Marinas both with great facilities and accepting transit boats. Actually the original Oriental Marina answers 16 for both locations. We have a free town dock(for 48 hours) that is very popular but it has no electricity or water and can usually only accomodate 2 or 3 boats. “The Bean” is the local coffee shop right on the water front. The “Tiki Bar” at the Oriental Marina is the local watering hole. For boat stuff try The Waterway Provisioning Co on the waterfront. We have a West Marine but it’s about 1 mile hike from the water front. Same for groceries, the Town and Country is about a mile walk. New hot spot eatery is The Silos, great Italian and Pizza. M&M Cafe is on the waterfront and is always good. You can get fuel at the original Oriental Marina. If you need parts, service, or a haul out try Deaton Yacht Service on Whitaker Creek. Enjoy your stay it’s a fantastic boating village.

ParticipantHi Dale: I brokered and sold “GRITS”about a year ago from our Oriental, NC brokerage. It did have a hard dodger. It was home made (teak I believe) but somebody did a fairly nice job. I’ll check in the office tomorrow and see if we have any file photos that I can post for you.

ParticipantI run a yacht brokerage here in Oriental about 30 minutes from New Bern. If you are committed to stay in New Bern your best bet is probably going to be Bridgepoint Marina. My choice would be Northwest Creek about 5 miles out of New Bern. It’s a great facility but they have an ongoing waiting list. The Sheraton used to be everybodys choice but they went to some ungodly rate ($10 a foot?) There is also Blackbeard’s marina, it’s a private club but I’m not sure about live-aboards. There’s also a new marina being built in the Bridgeton area(just across the bridge from New Bern) it’s supposed to be a first class facility but is under construction as we speak, I think they have temporary dockage and showers. I’m sure the Chamber of Commerce in N.B. would have some contact info for you. Consider joining The Neuse Sailing Association. Good group of active cruisers from all over the area. I have the P 424 “MOJO” that I’m resurrecting now at our yard. Good luck with your move..you’ll fall in love with the area and people!
