john stevensonParticipantJames,
No experience with the lz-1, I've owned a SailRite Yachtsman (AKA Reeds) for about 15 years. I've had it on board since 2003. Used it to match hatch awnings and port light curtains this summer. Really needed those hatch awnings for the summer in NC.
The lz-1 I believe is a SailRite customized standard walking foot machine (Thompson?). You can sometimes find them on eBay or even Harbor Freight was about 25% or more below the SailRite price. Of course then you don't get SailRite support, which for me is worth the extra money. I would like to have the walking foot feature, but this machine won die.On Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 1:55 PM, james bartch < ()> wrote:

i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the sailrite sewing machines? the lz-1, the blue one. i have done a fair amount of sewing work on other boats and wanting to buck up and get a good machine.
And i thought that i would ask if anyone has a sailrite hanging in the closet that they are not using??? projects include uv cover for the head sail, stack pack – maybe, winch and barby covers etc. shade covers – need shade…

john stevensonParticipantTo further clarify my suggested meeting point (at whatever time) I've attached a graphic of where the “above the Pusser's booth” is at the show. This is actually a terrace of the Marriott hotel. The nice thing about this location is access to the toilets in the hotel rather than the portable johns outside the show.

I might add mine is long gone. Sold it to friends I met in Lagos, PT in 2007. They are still in the Med making great use of it. I don't remember who made mine. Bought it in Gib for I think 300 pound sterling. On Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 6:17 PM, John Stevenson < ()> wrote:

Hey guys i have a favor to ask. I am interested in getting one of passerelle type boarding ladders that SV Sarah has on their vessel. so far i have spoken to Besenzoni, imtra and looked at nemo. they all have simalar type aluminum folding gangway type ladders but i would like to look into the passerelle type stainless steel that drops down as a swim ladder. Besenzoni says they no longer make the stainless steel version “manual type” i think the number is a pt 164.
if you see anything that may be of interest at the boat show, please contact me at with any info: james bartch 808 256-6616 honolulu hawaii.
I am stern tied to the dock similar to med mooring style. the pricing i am seeing is in Euro's at 1.4 times the US buck plus air freight “wow”.
and i am as far west as you can get… your help would be greatly appreciated.

If Navtec has a recall it should be one their website and/or their tech support number (they are still in business – right?). Navtec did have a recall on their turnbuckles in the 70s to replace the bottle screw.
If the turnbuckles are original and you're going through a major refit, might as well put them on the list as well.Love spending other people's money.

john stevensonParticipantYep, that's what I expect. I did have a diver clean the bottom and replace the shaft zincz last week. He said he could find all the thru-hulls by the fuzz bloom on each. He said the prop was one big fuzz ball. Who'd thunk that kind of fouling in the Neuse River. I thought this was nearly fresh water. Guess not.

The first thing you'll notice when you cast off for that boat yard is that your engine will not move the boat. That's because your propeller has disappeared into a mass of rock-like barnacles. They'll spin, but the won't propel. This news flash after a little Chinese fire drill here in Taylor's Creek a couple of weeks ago when I cast off for a day sail after sitting still too long.

I don't know what happened, but just after I uploaded the latest version of the software, it started to fail on startup on my computer. Something corrupted the main program file. I fixed it and that version is being uploaded. If you have already downloaded and installed the program and it works OK – the main form appears when you click the “Nav” button then the problem was not in the uploaded version – something I did after I uploaded it. If it fails (Excel aborts), then download the zip file again. It'll work this time – I promise. On Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 4:06 PM, John Stevenson < ()> wrote:

My v values should be slightly more accurate as i calculate it for each day not just the middle day for each page.

I originally created this Day Almanac report to verify the program calculations line by line against a real almanac. I've never used it as an Almanac source, and now if discovered a couple of things I left out.- Sun Semi-Diameter. I have a subroutine that calculates this value so it will be easy to add it to the report
- v and d values for the Planets. Again this should be easy to add.
So I have one more update to the program to make the almanac complete. In the mean time you can down load the program and test it with the existing almanac report at http://www.svsarah.com/Sailing/ewTechniqueExcelNavigation.htm
About halfway down the page is the link to download the program in a zip file.
Creating the almanac printout takes a little while (15 sec/day on my 3 ghz machine), which is why I put in the progress meter so you can tell if the program is doing anything.
The documentation covers the installation and set process.John

I think you are right about the rope twisting the chain under load, although I never really noticed it when I used rope and chain. Then I was not anchoring in the Trades as you do most of the winter. I've heard from others with more anchoring experience than I of similar problems.
A swivel might help.John

I don't know for sure what causes this. My windlass is a Lofrans Tigres, and I've wondered if it's the way the chain feeds onto the gypsy that causes the twist. Someone told me this is inherent when you have rope to chain, because it's the rope that twists and that gets transmitted to the chain. That problem, along with castleing when I retrieve my anchor, gives us one big pain in the butt.
Any suggestions very very appreciated!!

I'm about to put up a new version today, which has a progress meter on generating the almanac (just so you know it's doing something). I'll give you a post back when it available for down load. You have to run the application to generate the almanac. It generates the output as an Excel printout which you can direct to printer or a file if you have file printers (e.g., pdf) on your computer. You don't have to print it to review the almanac, the report is stored in an Excel worksheet that can be saved and then printed at a later date.On Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 12:23 PM, Silver Heels < ()> wrote:

I never pretended to understand the spherical trigonometry of what I was doing back when I used celestial navigation regularly. I just learned the steps by rote from a skinny little book (now almost certainly out of print) titled “Self Taught Navigation – Ten Easy Steps” by Robert Y. Kittredge. That was enough to get me where I was going every time and I left it at that.
Right now I would be delighted to have the tables & corrections I need from the Nautical Almanac without buying a 2009 book that will be out of date in a month after I start using it. As for shooting the moon, I did that a few times back in the day just to do it, but can do without it for this trip. Is this application something I might use, at least to download the pages I'll need?
