ModeratorDavid,
I know they have no way of giving an exact quote yet, but have they given you any idea re: shipping costs? Thanks,

ModeratorI used 1 1/2 gallons per coat using a 3/8″ nap roller. Just finished yesterday, in fact. I used Sea Hawk Biocop TF.

ModeratorAnother vote for never using that surveyor again. BIG difference between those boats.
The 424 does have 4 bolts holding the strut in, however. They’re right under the engine, toward the transmission…and near impossible to get to. The good news is that, after 34 years, the nuts on mine were nice and snug. I.e. nothing to worry about.

ModeratorThanks gents.
Rich, roger on all of that and, if I were designing the powertrain, I’d definitely reach out to a prop manufacturer. But the reduction gearing was sized by the motor system manufacturer based on hanging a 20 x 13 behind it. And I trust their engineering skills.I may not have been clear in my original questions. The original size is actually a moot point but I asked anyway to ease my conscience…I didn’t make sure what I had attached (boat was in the water) before the system was designed. Mea culpa.
So really, the only question I “really” have is “Does anyone have a 20x13LH for sale?”
Cheers,
Evan

ModeratorHi Rock,
As it so happens, we’re currently in the middle of our electric conversion on Revery. Also, Dan K converted his and Ewan (site admin) is converting using the same system I have. I’ll be starting a topic detailing everything in about a week, but I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
I will leave you with this thought. For us, who will be long distance cruising, electric would NOT have made sense if we didn’t already have an 8kW generator “just lying around”. Battery technology is just not there yet to support the kind of range we need (IMO), unless you want to spend $25K+ on LiFePo4 batteries.

ModeratorAlan,
I’ll look again when I get to the boat this morning, but I’m almost positive they’re wood screws. Definitely not through bolted!
I haven’t replaced or rebedded ours…they don’t leak and I don’t mind if they’re ugly. 🙂Evan

ModeratorRevery’s are not angled. Hull #219…

ModeratorThanks Rich. I had it listed as 1001 until we got the details (since this is the first record we have of 187). Updated!

ModeratorGentlemen,
My apologies for the delay…
The engine and all parts were sold lock, stock, and barrel to one individual. Sorry.Paul, I do have a new, old stock mixing elbow if you’re interested. Email me off list if you are.
Thanks for the interest.

ModeratorRich,
I’m no expert, but that appears to simply be how the shaft was aligned when the PO but it all back together. I doubt it would cause an issue, but I guess it could be putting some extra pressure on the cutlass bearing.
If that’s the case, it wouldn’t take much (or long) to adjust the v-drive mounts to get it centered. Not a sale-killer IMHO.Evan

ModeratorI checked mine today…Revery appears to have them as well. I never noticed them because we have a white hull that’s not particularly shiny right now. 🙂
Anyone else?

ModeratorJosh and Lucy,
Not being one to shy away from a project given the right price, I hate to say this…
Run from that poor boat. The water damage alone will cost too much and take too much time for it to be worth it.
Had the rest of the boat been in good condition (and it’s not), the engine / v-drive replacement might have been a good ROI. But knowing what they’re asking, even if you paid 66% of that, you’re still at ~$30K – $40K which is 50% the price of a nice 424. And you haven’t started on other repairs.By the way, there are no drop in replacement engines. They all require a lot of reconfiguration…but the Beta 50 seems to be the easiest.
Sorry to be such a downer. I know how hard it is to WANT a boat but walk away. We did it many times.
Good luck in your hunt!Evan

ModeratorRyan,
That’s a pretty tall order. We’re 99% sure we’re going electric but have had to temper our expectations a LOT (as you’ve discovered).
6 knots? I’m not sure a sailboat needs to run 6 Nm/hr, but that’s just me. Hundreds of miles? Same thought. We will actually be a hybrid diesel/electric and, truth be told, we wouldn’t have considered if we didn’t already have a 8kw generator “just laying around”. The storage technology just isn’t there yet…but we’re working around it.
Stay tuned in a separate series of threads as we convert.
