I am kicking myself for not driving down to the Bean to check my email last night. I was down and worked on the boat till eight. Pretty much a shower, a little dinner and off to bed. I took the skiff and checked out Adam’s boat down at the marina. Back to it today till four and then home to go to work. Would have been great to see you. I never miss a chance for a sundowner at the Tiki Bar if I can help it.

I have the old sump in place and I have a holding tank on the shelf on the forward higher shelf of the keel. I don’t think you could fit down there. My bilge unit is lowered with a rope. I have attached a picture. I hope that the new engine will eliminate the mess down there. The manual pump hose did have a strainer and was just loose in the sump. The hose had a hole chaffed in it under the tank cradle that was the reason I had to replace the hose. I have attached a picture. The unit sits in the bottom of the sump and fits tight at the bottom. It sounds like the aft end of your holding tank is hanging out without support. Is it possible that it slipped back off the step or is it secured where it is? Is there a support under the aft section of the tank?

I am using Vista and 2007 Office. There is no tools that I see, there is a “trust center”. I will try to adjust the settings there. I enabled macros and didn’t get the security notice. When the file opens it is read only and in compatibility mode. Should I try saving it in excel and see if it updates the formulas?

That is what I have done only I used starboard. The small pump sits on the bottom of the bilge, with a lager one on a step 10″ higher. I still have a little water that runs back down when the pump shuts off, only 1/2 inch or so.

I have not been able to get the file past my security. No matter what I do macros are disabled. I have to admit that I thought we would have to use MS Access in order to be able to do searches.

Thanks for all the hard work

I am going to plumb the fresh air through the box lid. I’ll make the lid out of pegboard and that should flush fresh air over the battery and keep it insulated from the heat. Thanks for the idea.

When I installed the aluminum angle over my stringers I covered the aluminum with a product called GLY. It is dialectic silicone grease in a small jar. I covered the stringers with thickened epoxy and clamped the aluminum over that. The next day I just tapped the aluminum and it came loose no problem. I would think that it would do the same for your application.

Thanks for the good resource, it looks like the soft wall is for shorter runs than the one on the 424.

    Adam, Tor

I am planning to run the 4″ duct right above the battery box and hope the engine compartment does not get too hot. I will have to check with the battery specialist as to how much heat the battery can stand. As far as AGM batteries I have an Odyssey that has been in an 18′ fishing boat that has been in service for 6 years and shows no sign of slowing down. That battery gets no where near the attention that the batteries on the sailboat get. I had looked at the bottom of the hanging locker but with the cockpit drain in there it just looked like I would lose the whole locker if I stuck the battery in there. Tor let me know when you will start the trip up north. I hope to meet you when you make Beaufort or even Oriental.

Thanks Chuck I’ll be looking forward to the learning experience. I seem to be looking up at the learning curve each time I stick my head below decks these days.

Thanks for thinking of me. I was planning to do just that. Do you think that it will be a problem to do while the boat is still in the water? I wouldn’t think that I would get much of a leak since the stern is up so high with the engine out that the top of the rudder is just below the water.

If you go to the 424 web site and look at the photo album /engine bay/ the view from where the engine usually is you can see the view from inside the tank cradle. I thought the same thing about just grinding the whole thing out and building it lower. It takes up the whole locker I guess so you can service the batteries without getting into the locker.

I built the box with ears sticking out on either side for the bolts to go into the existing box. I reinforced the bottom with glass and coated the whole thing with epoxy. Then I smeared the back with 5200 and bolted it in. I have bruises on my chest and forehead from laying in the locker. But once it was in I jumped in the skiff and went for a ride and got myself back into the reason for the effort. Just messing about on boats like Tor says.

I don’t know if you have a Batteries Plus store near you but, I was able to get 2 4Ds, GRP 27 and a GRP 31 AGM for just over $900. No shipping when I picked them at the store. I haven’t finished the install but they are made by DECCA and are the same battery that WM sells. When I was shopping this was the best deal that I could find.
