    Linus,

My boat came with 3 inspection ports evenly spaced fore & aft across the tops of each tank, and a lot of crud inside the tanks. Only one of the three ports had an easy-access hole cut through the plywood cover. I cut access holes above each of the other ports, angling the jig-saw blade inward so I could then set the cutouts back in the holes. I was able to scrub out the tanks with various scrubbers and brushes, including one with a foot-long handle, plus plenty of detergent, Comet, some bleach and several rinses in between and afterwards. Draining each rinse was simplified by cutting the tank-to-manifold hoses above the bilge sump and installing T’s and a drain hose aimed downward (which I otherwise keep plugged). I was able to get replacement O-rings for the inspection ports from their manufacturer, Beckson Marine.

I recently replaced most of the hoses on my boat – sanitation, seawater and freshwater – including the water tank-to-manifold hoses, which were gross after 30 years of use and neglect. I did have to remove the plywood cover to get at each salon tank’s exit hose fitting, but that’s a one-time fix. However, I’m going to follow the example of others in this group and cut access hatches into those aft bulkheads so I can use the dead space aft of the tanks. (I’ve just done that in the shower stall and, even though I knew there was a big space back there, I’m amazed and delighted at just how big it actually is. I’m thinking of using it as my garage.)

    🙂

Thanks, Rich. I had no idea they’d built so many 365’s. I actually looked for the answer on that
pearson365.com forum, but somehow missed what you found.

    Thanks,

    Bob,

I have a factory-original foot locker beneath the mid-ship companionway ladder. It’s close to the measurements you give except for the athwartships length. I plan to put my PowerSurvivor in there. If necessary, you could cut access into the lower aft corner of the adjacent hanging locker to get the additional length you need inside the foot locker. This location has the advantage of being close to the starboard water tank, which is what my watermaker will feed. The watermaker discharge line leads easily enough through the hanging locker and into the head locker above and outboard of the head sink, where it can be fed into the deck scupper/sink drain.

Another possibility, which I have yet to measure or really look at, is the dead space beneath the settee immediately aft of either of the salon water tanks. It may be too tight in there, but if not then you could install an access hatch in the settee’s aft-facing bulkhead, most easily on the starboard side.

I run a sextant, with a GPS back-up when the sky’s overcast. Saves electricity.

The “local” WM is just far enough away, and I dislike in-town driving enough, that I rarely go there. Port supply delivers to my marina daily and otherwise I shop online. Maybe I’ll go for this, though – IF they’ve got both hatches in stock at the store.

No doubt the WM price is outrageous. I believe I paid $140 each for the WM Group 31 AGM’s from Port Supply a year and a half ago and thought I’d done all right price wise. I didn’t know about the factory-direct brand, Deka, at that time. Just curious whether Deka’s cost less than that. Hopefully, it won’t really matter to me for some years yet.

Thanks, Linus. I’m sure you’re right about them being the same battery. I heard & read about them last year, but forgot the brand. I don’t see any price lists on those sites. Can you really buy a Deka brand Group 31 AGM for $75, delivered (or store pick-up)? That’s one heck of a good deal.

    Linus,

To which of the Batteries Plus models were you referring? I didn’t see any Group 31, 105 Ah AGM’s on their site.

Thanks, Bob. I find these two choices at Port Supply. Anybody know why one might be better than the other (aside from the small price difference)?

    Adam,

How did you come up with $2,000+ for AGM’s? That seems very high. The Port Supply price for Group 31 (105 Ah) AGM’s is $147.99 ea. Four of those ($592) plus one Group 27 starter battery ($135) totals $727.

    Bill,

What are the dimensions (or the WM part number) of the shower stall access hatch you installed?

    Thanks,

    Quent,

The plywood bottoms in my Pearson battery boxes were also trashed by battery acid. Even after I removed all the wood and scrubbed the boxes repeatedly with baking soda (more than a year ago!), the sulfuric smell of the acid remains, albeit much diminished from what it was when I bought the boat.
