ParticipantCopy that. Iâll have to look more closely. I have a marine machine shop here I can work with on a shim if necessary. I donât intend to tackle this job underwater, so will have to wait till the boat is on the hardâ¦donât know exactly when, but no later than the Fall.

ParticipantCopy that, Bob. Thanks. I assume you had no trouble of this sort with your flex-o-prop install?

ParticipantThanks Warren, this looks like an alternative! Iâm skeptical of my math, but using Drive Savers formula, I came up with a torque of 119 ft lbs for my W58, which means I could use the smallest one they sell. I need to look at the engine specs to see if this is the real numberâ¦seems way low to me. Anyway, it appears this option would give me an extra inch which might be enough. Did you experience any vibration advantage with your Drive Saver?

ParticipantRoger on the water intrusion. That is, it is pretty darn water tight. Our only water intrusion is around the mizzenâ¦havenât broken that code yet.

ParticipantPretty sure 30 weight, non-detergent. Butâ¦my PO used multi-vis detergent oil for 25 yrs without incident. He replaced the v-drive prior to my tenure with a new Walters unit, due to ârust-throughâ of the case from the salt water cooling circuit.

ParticipantHello James,
Our PO took the approach depicted in the atch picture. A track is screwed to the coaming all around and a âbolt ropeâ type arrangement is at the bottom edge of the side and aft panels. The panels slip in at the bottom and zip to the bimini at the top. Works pretty well, but sometimes a struggle to get it all together and zipped up. We learned to start all the zippers (barely) first, then once they are all started we can zip them up and have a pretty tight âgreenhouseâ. Super nice in the winter. The positioning of the side panels is not ideal from the standpoint that when you sit with your back against the coaming, your upper back contacts the panel. We sort of solve by putting cockpit pillows behind our backs which works pretty well. Thankfully, the 424 cockpit seats are generously wide, so this isnât awkward. When we have a crowd on board when the enclosure is up, we line the coaming with various throw pillows and it actually looks pretty good and seats well.

ParticipantThanks Warren, the Gori sounds like a pretty advanced propeller and an interesting option. Itâs advantage in reverse over other folders appears to be a real benefit.

ParticipantThanks Warren. My wife has been eyeballing the Gori. How does the Gori do in forward? And how do you get your Gori to fold?

ParticipantBeautiful, Rob. I’m envious. Congrats!

ParticipantI certainly will, Tor. But the tacking angle may not tell the whole story due to the crab angle, leeway, that we make. Thatâs why Iâd like to look at the GPS snail trail, and even throw a protractor over the screen to approximate true degrees made good to windward. I think that now, with the genoa, and just eyeballing the MFD screen, it looks to be about 100 degrees. Iâm hopeful that with the solent it will approach 90. I may be dreaming, but weâll seeâ¦

ParticipantHello Rich,
Thank you for the words of encouragement. Tell me this: how do you get your blades to fold? With our free wheeling transmissions, I perceive this to be a problem. My solution (in my mind, anyway) is to âlockâ the shaft with the Shaft Lok at a very low forward speed. The Shaft Lok is not a brake, and can only be activated with the prop shaft turning pretty slowly. Curious about your experienceâ¦

ParticipantVery good question, Tor, and I figured you ask it. Sadly, my âtrue windâ feature on the MFD wasnât working the day I tried the Solent, nor did I have the âsnail trailâ feature turned onâ¦so I donât have an accurate answer. Or any answer, really. Butâ¦next time I have the sail up I will secure this data and report back! Sadly, just got back from an overnighter, and I have an engine overheat issue, so thatâs the next project. Hopefully something simpleâ¦

ParticipantHello Bob,
You have me rethinking a folding prop if I canât expect at least equal performance in reverse as the current fixed pitch (I get that I need to apply more RPM, but pulling strongly to starboard might be an issue). Weâve gotten pretty accustomed to the current fixed pitch on Blue Moonâ¦we can play the prop walk relatively successfully, and frankly, I donât find it that bad. Greg Long, and maybe someone else, recommended the Campbell Sailor fixed pitch. Iâve heard good things about this option, but Iâm concerned about sailing performance with the prop âlockedâ with my Shaft-Lok. And I really donât like to listen to the whine of the V-drive all night. So, a real conundrum, so to speak. I should probably talk to Flex-o-fold, and maybe to Slipstream as well, as Rich Carter suggested. I sure donât want to get stuck with a (backing) turkey at the price I would expect to pay for any of the above options.
On the solent, I will retransmit my latest so that it will go out via e-mail. And if you use the search function on the site (search for âsolent stayâ) you can see my previous postings with some pics of the set up. And of course if you are in Ft Walton, Iâd love to show you Blue Moon.

ParticipantThanks to all of you who have responded, this is good poop and much appreciated. I need to determine my full power RPM with the current set up. My tach has been inaccurate since I acquired the vessel, and I have calibrated it recently. Thatâs a data point I hope to get today.
I know the max prop would be better in reverse, and have spoken to numerous owners of other boats who like the max prop. But I really donât want to give up the motoring performance in forward, seeing as how we do more of that than weâd like.
Bob, thanks very much for this valuable info on the flex-0-fold. And belated congrats on your performance on the P-Cola to Cuba race. BTW, there is a talk at the FWYC (Fort Walton) from Dr Piacente on May 12 if you have an interest. You may know this already. If you want to attend this, just let me know. Also, if youâd like to see my Solent stay set up on Blue Moon, just completed, Iâd be happy to show you. Iâm really happy with it so far, and the boat goes to windward better than ever. I know you had some problems with your roller furler in the really challenging weather you faced (Hunter is my sailmaker).
Also Bob, how do you find the flex-o-fold in reverse? As good (?) as the original fixed pitch? A little better (I hope)?
