Thanks Tor. Your insight appreciated as always. I’ll let you know how things turn out (might be a while).

I’m ordering the 30-01 and 30-08 as we speak. I’ll post if it doesn’t work out, but can’t see why it wouldn’t.

Thank you. I was looking in the product description for the specific part number. Should’ve looked harder…

I have a follow on question, I think for Pete, but anyone who has a response: What diameter mizzen sheet is used with the Garhaeur blocks that Pete recommended? I checked their catalogue, but can’t find ‘maximum diameter line’ listed for their blocks. My mizzen sheet is 7/16″, and is new, so I want to be reasonably sure it will work with the Garhaeur 30-08 and 30-01 before I order. Thanks again…

We recently purchase Blue Moon, hull 189 and the lockers needed a lot of organizing. My husband tackled the project early on and came up with both a practical and elegant solution for the starboard and aft lockers. We’re leaving the port locker with only line organizers so our folding bikes will fit. Some pictures are posted on our blog http://bluemoonsails.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-new-adventure-begins.html.
They were built from marine grade plywood then glassed into place. The starboard shelf fits over the batteries and can be removed to service them. The aft shelf is actually built to match the contours of the stern. Hope this helps.

We recently purchased the 1982 ketch, Blue Moon so not a lot of experience yet. However, we did bring her back from a port north of Miami, around through Marathon in the keys and then up to the panhandle of Florida so we have a few miles under the keel. So far no complaints. Before actually being aboard, we thought the extra companionway would be a detractor but have found that not to be the case. We actually like it for bringing supplies aboard and general boarding. It is easier than working our way around the dodger which we don’t want to be without. She is a steady sailer and we had some great runs with the longest being 205 miles. The smaller sails does make the handling easier. We are in our late 50s so that is a consideration for us. We’re still working to make her our own but don’t regret the decision.

I have bought a Nexus 10 with the built in GPS and other bells and whistles so it should work in the gulf. I’m looking forward to figuring it all out on our way home from Hollywood to Fort Walton Beach. Thanks for all the input on charts. I plan to download some and give them a whirl. Anyone have a CMap card reader they’d be willing to sell? I would like to transfer all my waypoints from my old chartplotter to the new one.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Alan,
I wasn’t aware of those devices.

Looks like a nice pad, Linus but it’s still WiFi only so it won’t work offshore as a backup. At least that is what the rep with Navionics tells me.

Thanks for the input. I was convinced it would work without wifi as long as it has true GPS but a “technical expert” told me otherwise. She was most likely doing some serious CYA so I thought I would ask some real end users. We have well used, well loved paper charts that always travel with us but we’ve done enough cruising to want backups to the backups. The boat has a relatively new Raymarine C-140 that will be a learning process in itself. I have Navionics downloaded to my phone to play with and like its features plus it is compatible with the chartplotter software. I am not a true techie but I can find my way around most programs. I am also teaching myself Celestial Navigation. My husband gave me a nice Sextant for Christmas and we have a lot of friends helping me figure things out. I hope to be proficient by the time we’re back in Northwest Fl. We look forward to meeting up with other 424 owners/cruisers.

I am familiar with the aps, thanks. Does the Samsung work away from cell/wifi coverage? I really only want it as a back up to paper and the chartplotter but I do want it to work in the gulf.

I had a lightning strike and lost all my old emails including any contact information. If you are still interested in selling, email me a typhoontye@cox.net.
