ParticipantI use a 2 part system called honey teak.It is fairly transparent and shows the grain.Practical sailor has given it a long life rating high rating in the top 2-3 products on the market comparable to Bristol.I had my top redone using his system [white]and added non skid where needed.Lasted forever and continued to look like new..You can check out their website. The owner Tom Fabula will answer the phone and is very personable and helpful- lives around Stuart Florida.
He also sells 2 part color systems that are easy to apply with a roller and come out like a spray finish-excellent for cabin tops or hulls. His varnish system starts with 3 tinted coats, then 3 clear or more are applied. They can applied wet every 30 minutes so you can complete many coats the same day.I had a cheoy lee clipper with a lot of varnish and it was the only way I could have it look good and not work fulltime on it.It lasts a long time if you scuff it up and apply a clear coat or 2 every 6 months.Check it out.<.. snip>

ParticipantWhen I first looked at 424’s everyday 3 to 4 years ago on yachtworld, there were 17 or more for sale.Now,5 or 6 spread across the country including the one for $49000 in Mexico. There probably aren’t a lot of buyers running down to Mexico to look at it and to bring it home. That alone has probably caused a price drop-this has been for sale for maybe a year?
There seems to be more buyers than sellers.<.. snip>

ParticipantI have an older Caribe inflatable the PO gave me with the boat.I’ve painted it twice.West Marine sells a paint in 2 color choices-grey and white.A good color match helps. Also look on the internet. All colors but very pricey..I think they’ll specify whether it ‘s good for PVC- I think West Marine covers both.
The surface has to be very clean-if not the stuff will peel off within a short time.Even if put on well and 2 coats some of it will peel if rubbed up against a hard surface-like a SS ladder hanging off the back.My old dinghy looks as good as new but I do have to touch it up once in a while.Helped me delay a boat unit or 2 investment : >
The store in Oriental recommneded a top srpay clear coat over the coating for added protection.Haven’t used it yet.
The PO had covered the pontoons with sunbrella fabric-dark blue.Looked great and great protection but was getting old and faded.I have scene that also in a boat tips magazine. Not too difficult
and good protection from the sun-especially since the biggest killer for PCV is the sun.I seem to recall you have are good with canvas.Just some thoughts.Post generated from Pearson424 Forum using Mail2Forum

ParticipantI still hate the big long deep bilge and the 1-2 inches of water sitting there.I’m getting closer to sloping the bottom using waterproof cement so the water pooling is on the front end and maybe 2 by 2 ft.

ParticipantI know most of you won’t approve but I redid my cabin top using 3/16″ wood paneling [4 by 8] with finished white gloss surface-purchased at either Home Depot or Lowes..It has 2 parrallel grooves about an inch apart and then repeats every 10 inches or so.Mine was not the first boat in Oriental to do this. When the old fabric was removed we found 2 small leaks-one from the mast and one from the forward hatch. After fixing those we installed a layer of insulation sandwiched between the paneling and the ceiling. The addl thickness reqd shaving the outer trim pcs with a router by an 1/8″.This was 6 months ago.It looks and has held up great.I figure if a panel gets damaged,it will cost $40 to replace. We have new Shannon’s in the area-the ceilings looks similar. This turned out awesome.
Added new teak and holly floor on top of old.Varnished and trimmed out-like new.Added teak floor trim to hide old dark stains just above the flloor boards.New brass pulls to remove floor panels.
Added 2 more dorade cowls to cabin top to add more air movement and circulation to the cabin.
Re-did bathroom sink counter top with black corian, replaced white formica side with teak wood.Added new SS sink and faucet.Plan on converting to compost head and simplifying the plumbing below.
Plan to re-do galley with black corian in the future.
Converted center storage space above port salon to become a wine rack- now that was my greatest improvement!
Added new custom fit mattress to v-berth that is fitted to the cabin sides slope.Added a lot more sleep space for the wife.: ><.. snip>

ParticipantI am very familar with the Pearson 424 for sale in Oriental,NC[Mike Bogie’s boat].It spent most of its life up north and stored during the winter-it’s listed on yachtworld.Worth looking at.Deaton’s yacht brokerage not only has it listed, but Jack bought a 424 after selling a few.

ParticipantMy honda g. sits in the cockpit nicely in between the mizzen mast and the wheel. It sits under the table and is almost invisible.Gas cans normally on deck.PE operated this way for many years.
