ParticipantI used formica in the same area you describe. It matches the galley formica.Almost no prep, cheap, easy to cut and apply.Just remove the ports, cut and glue the formica,re-install the ports.Used one seam on each side. The look is awesome.Changes the whole interior look.Updates it but also brightens the whole interior as well as makes it look larger. You also remove it if you or a new owner decides and there’s the original teak side.My friend and I completed the project in 8 hours- 4 hours day one and completed with another 4 hours day 2.
I only did this in the main cabin, the V berth and aft cabin were left alone since the teak was looking good and I didn’t feel it would have the same dramatic effect.________________________________

I had the same rot around my mast and did some extensive repairs last year, including having a new mast shoe fabricated. When I dropped the overhead panels down the plywood literally disintegrated into a 5 gallon bucket. What a gooey nasty mess. I ended up actually doing away with the original egg colored overhead vinyl panels. I found some 4X8 sheets of a white composite paneling at Lowes. It was fairly inexpensive, The description says it’s water resistant…time will tell. It gave the main salon a great Hereshoff look and really brightened things up. I even insulated the complete overhead in the main salon. Rebedded all the hatches and hand rails, hopefully now no running water down the bulkheads!

ParticipantHi Pete,I also replaced all 3 hatches with low profile Bowmar.the replacement for over the galley was slightly larger so I made a frame/ring out of starbright.they look and work great and the cost was reasonable at the time(5 years ago)

Back to another perennial topic: hatches
As I prep to paint the decks yesterday, I removed the Bomar cast hatches including the PO-installed 10″ one over the Pullman berth. I have considered replacing these with Lewmar Ocean hatches but when I saw that the list price on the Bomars is two to three times that of the lewmars. I started reflecting on the quality of the Bomars. Since the plastic is cheap and easy to change and the seals are similarly simple and the hatches have braces under the plastic (which Bomar specs as lexan instead of acrylic) and the dogs are bulletproof why not just stick with these and paint them while I am spraying everything else. Anyone have a different view about these hatched?

Ours is an 18″ LH 12 on a 1.5″ shaft for a W-58. I just replaced it as the old one was long in the tooth.
