Check all the metal tubing in the cooling system while the beast is out. I had some pinholes and had to do a replacement in situ (I think I can join the circus now).

These tubes are not available now and you’ll have to have them fabricated. I have a great source in Wisconsin that can handle the diameter needed at very reasonable prices (no one on the island had gear to make one in the right diameter). I sent them the old one as a reference and they did a quick turn around. Let me know if you need source info.

Are you going to do a rebuild? Or plug in another power plant?

Tanks for the insights! (Had to do that.)

No leaks yet on our boat. But Quent’s #132 is close to my #135 and I guess I better be prepared.

As a naive aluminum tank owner (#135), why couldn’t bladder fuel tanks be utilized as permanent replacements? Sounds a lot easier than pulling the engine.

Just another perfect sailing week in paradise. Big news though. My son scrubbed down the deck (big news if you have kids!).

I noticed that Alan’s boat has a SS lined refer. Was this original? My boat has a fiberglass liner in the box.

I had the carpenter build a shelf on the forward end of the compartment, which allowed us to open the door to the largest microwave I could buy for this space. I also had a 120 outlet installed on the forward wall as its power source. (We have the U shaped galley.)

The rest of the space is just stacked cereal boxes, snacks, etc

I converted the hanging locker next to the saloon companionway ladder into a pantry, using wire shelving from Lowe’s. This setup swallows a lot of groceries and keeps the galley clear.

I have pix if you would like.

Aloha Patrick: I had a place in Wisconsin manufacture the contorted metal tubes that run the cooling water on the back of the engine. No one in the Islands had the machinery to handle pipe this size. They did a tremendous job cheaply! They also fabricate for collector cars, etc. I’ll get their contact info for you if you’re interested.

The top plate on my V drive was thoroughly corroded and broke when I removed it to rebuild the unit. I had to have another one made. I never had any temp issues with drive and rebuilt it when I checked the oil and it was milky.

I purchased the new prop for my boat from “The Prop Shop” (800.634.8318). The contact was Gary (direct 425.745.1700). The prop is made by ZF Prop, located in Taiwan. The cost was $440+shipping, with a turnaround time of 8 weeks. Evidently it has to be made and is not off the shelf.

Higher priced props can be purchased from US companies, but I’ve been told the quality difference is negligible. This is the first prop I’ve ever replaced, so I’m relying on my research here. I am replacing the old 3 blade bronze with a new one.

Ours is an 18″ LH 12 on a 1.5″ shaft for a W-58. I just replaced it as the old one was long in the tooth.

    Tor:

Nope. You’re in the May issue of Sail, page 38. You got the larger circ book.
    More $ perhaps?

I just had the bottom pealed on my 1980 ketch. There were a few small blisters and I also had several coats of old bottom paint slaking off. Once we got down to the glass, she was perfect. Epoxy fairing, 4 coats of barrier and some heavy duty paint and she’s beautiful. She sails better than ever.

Even better news, the tsunami hit while she was on the hard!
