ParticipantI didn’t think of the tank vent (me…duh). I’ve just found water on the inspection port and assumed that was the culprit. Probably the vent overflow collecting there. I do listen to water coming up the fill tube though and try to time it accordingly. If some fresh water in the bilge is no problem, then I’m good.ThanksDanJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantI had the same leak problem and had other commitments that to be dealt with. I used emergency rescue tape from West to seal up the leak till I could deal with it. It worked great.kalinowski
ParticipantIf is the same during our electric conversion. Those damn throttle and trans levers were a pain to remove! I sanded and repainted the pedestal while at it.Have you designed your “throttle” (pot switch) yet?Dan. ParticipantDid you run aground? Was it a PO? Was she blocked improperly?kalinowski
ParticipantIn Hawai’i, it’s called peeling. I had our boat “peeled” and then added 3 layers of barrier coat. Topped all off with 2 coats of bottom paint. I haven’t had a blister since and it’s been 5 years.kalinowski
ParticipantYou previously mentioned having a tight fit with the motor? How did you resolve that? I’m curious about where you mounted the control unit.kalinowski
ParticipantHow did you get the fuel tank out? I pulled mine out in one piece after I got rid of the Westerbeast. The hard part was undoing the top fittings. On my way to the dumpster with it, I was lucky enough to run into a guy who offered me $25 for it!kalinowski
ParticipantThanks all for the info on lifts.Never really thought about the variances as we go to the the same local yard all the time. All our sailing with this boat has been limited to these Sandwich Isles.Dan KJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantIn the 9 years we’ve owned our ketch, we’ve only been going to one yard here on O’ahu for service (only 2 big Travelifts on island). We’ve always gone in bow first and never had to adjust the rig. Based on all the more experienced comments posted, I’m wondering if this is uncommon?DanJolly Lama #135KeehiLagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantI’ve never had a problem. Just make sure the aft strap isn’t on the prop shaft. The first time my yard did a lift, they had a guy dive under to check placement. Then they took pix for future reference.Dan KJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantCurious. What hull number is Bead Game? How did she get her keel crack?Dan KalinowskiJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantAloha Typhoontye: the overheating problem was the last straw for me with the original W58. After nursing along the old Westerbeast, the unsolvable overheating hassles pushed me to decision time.
I chucked the W58, V-drive, fuel tank, and all. Went electric. Fits our boat usage perfectly with no worries.
Good Luck

ParticipantI guess I’m lucky as I’ve never had a leak from the plastic, non-opening
ports.Yes, my four refinished ports are aluminum. They’re not perfect, but look pretty good for the dollars spent (about $150).Dan KJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantMy 1980 ketch came with only 4 opening ports: port side in aft cabin; port side over stove; stbd side above head sink; stbd side in shower stall. I removed them, had them sand blasted and powder coated, and fitted new seals and lenses. Look great and a cheap alternative.Dan KJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahu -
