ParticipantAloha Quent: thanks for the tips! Hope the blizzard wasn’t too hard on y’all. Come to think of it, I haven’t thrown a snowball in years.Best,Dankalinowski
ParticipantAloha Tor: thanks for the tip. Sometimes the answer to a complicated question is hiding right out in the open.Mahalo!Dan KalinowskiJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantAloha Ken: thanks for your blow by blow description and pix of removing the fuel tank. This helps immensely.I’m only doing half the job you did. I’m disconnecting the WBeast and letting the yard pull it out….for good. I’ll also have a service pump the tank out (no more need for diesel).Once back at the slip I’ll pull the tank, clean & paint, then build a structure to house the battery bank.Damn, with the tank and engine gone there’s enough room to build a bunk for my mother in law in there!Mahalo,DanJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantThanks Ken! After your post I called the PSS people about whether I should go with a 2.5″ or 2.75″ shaft log unit. They assured me that their 2.5″ unit will comfortably stretch to fit a 2 5/8″ shaft log. Here in the Sandwich Isles, many things have to be ordered. Have to have all pieces in the same place at the same time to minimize yard days.DanJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahu1 user thanked author for this post.

ParticipantAloha Rich: I believe the missing parts of your analysis are how the boat will be used, and regeneration. The electric system will work for us as we don’t envision long passages. We will use the boat for day sailing as well as interisland excursions here in Hawai’i. As the wind is almost always blowing here in the Sandwich Isles, our motor usage will be in and out of harbors. Analysis shows that we can expect about 3 hours run time at 5.5 knots and around 4.5 at 4 knots before recharging. This more than meets our needs. Our present battery bank consists of six 180 ah Northstars. I may add more. The weight is roughly equivalent to the old W58, not counting fuel & tank. The motor will generate juice from prop rotation. I’m also exploring the new flexible solar panels from UK that are mounted in the sail material. Of course, a wind generator is perfect out here. These regeneration options can be added anytime after the basic system is installed.DanS/V Jolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantAloha Ewan: I have to ask what the benefit and cost of the 5 blade prop is. I never really checked out differences in props as I recently put a new 18″LH12 3 blade on the boat.I’m projecting my conversion costs to run around $14k. This includes the system, batteries, chargers, and yard fees.I purchased 6 vertical Northstar AGM thin plate batteries and 2 top drawer charger units. Reason: my son works at West so I got all that at half price. I might add more batteries moving forward. I’ll be interested in your experience with the carbon foam units. One of the main reasons I selected Thoosa was the fact that they have a rep on Mau’i who will assist with installation and be along for the sea trial. It’s a long way away out here! They also offer a 7 year warranty. One question I never got an answer on about the QT 20 was whether the 20kw was continuous as it’s billed as “max”.
As so called “pioneers” by the group, it will be interesting to compare notes for the benefit of all.DanJolly Lama #135Keehi Lagoon, O’ahukalinowski
ParticipantAloha Earl: I reviewed several systems before making my selection. I chose the Thoosa 12000 system because of their 7 year warranty and the fact that they have a rep here on Mau’i (I’m in Honolulu) that will do the sea trial and help with the conversion.Dan KalinowskiFor info Google annapolishybridmarine.comkalinowski
ParticipantGreat idea! Would it be easier to search by listing system first? That’s how I keep my boat maintenance log. Just a suggestion.(Plumbing/head/joker valve/)kalinowski
ParticipantThanks Rich. I always like to look before I leap.kalinowski
ParticipantWhat is the easiest way to disconnect the RV-20 and remove it from the shafts? I have an exploded parts diagram, but that doesn’t help much.
As y’all may know, I’m kissing the old W58 goodby and going electric. I’ve had several requests for parts, and I’ll be responding soon.

ParticipantI agree with supporting the invaluable service this site provides. What would be the appropriate amount? I don’t want to short sheet anyone

ParticipantThe PO on our boat removed the eyebrow and replaced the cabin top handrails with SS ones. Easier upkeep and clean looks IMHO.

ParticipantAloha Ewan: I’m not concerned with getting the (aluminum) tank out in one piece. Any tips on pulling it out in pieces? Would it be any easier?

ParticipantAloha Quent: I’m out here through March. I’d enjoy meeting you. The cruise line dock is about a 10 minute drive from my boat (I have wheels). We could hoist a few at La Mariana, an original 1940’s sailor’s bar which is next to my marina (lots of atmosphere and family friendly).I assume that your cruise will be the same island tour we took when we first came out here. Well worth it. The weather has been almost perfect out here.Email/text me with your plans. My phone is 404.405.4562.Dan
