Sorry but I didn’t get this post in my email… just noticed it while wandering around the 424 site…
I have been running without water cooling for 12 years without any issues. I filled the space up with 30W synthetic motor oil.
Mobjack Pearl, a 1980 424, is in my marina and he did the same thing about 15 years ago.Rick

How did you dam underneath the cabin top so the spartite wouldn’t run into the saloon?

ParticipantThe Admiral and I just got back from a 6 weeks cruise of the Chesapeake.
We were anchored in Lloyds Creek off the Wye River for a couple of days while the weather was rainy. We anchored using 100 feet of chain and 50 feet of 5/8″ 8 plait rode. The wind shifted around several times and sometimes it blew pretty good and at other times there was no wind.
When it came time to weigh anchor and leave, I discovered that the 8 plait rode had lodged itself between the aft part of the external thruster and the hull. I could not dislodge it from the deck of the boat… so I went swimming. It was easily dislodged from the water.
I have added an item to my winter haul out list… fill that space so it won’t happen again….Rick

ParticipantI replied the following to a similar question. No change since then.JackI self installed a 24v 300S on our boat in 2013. The same forward battery is used to power the Windlass.
I did all the install work except for a fiberglass pad that needed to be built on the hull where the unit lives.
This unit works great when the wind is less than 15 knots. Above 15 knots I've sometimes wanted more ummph.
I'm not sure one of their duplex units could be fitted on the 424 but it would be worth investigating. Also not sure if it would be cost effective. I'm not sure how much more $$ I would have put into a thruster to get the extra uumph I only rarely need.I (and the Admiral) will never go back to docking or maneuvering in tight marina quarters (fueling) without a thruster of some type.

Our 78 ketch head sink drains below the water line via it’s own seacock. I vented this line to make it drain faster.
I stopped using the existing stinky shower sump forward of the v drive. We pump the shower overboard above the water line with an inline strainer and then whale pump. The switch for the pump was outside the shower at the sink but we moved it to the soap bar space in the fiberglass stall. (we don’t use bar soap anymore and that space seems to stay dry.)Rick

Yes agree, any response will be subjective. I don’t think I noticed any difference in sailing performance. It’s possible I’m not good enough of a sailor to detect any difference.

ParticipantThanks for the replies.
Our plan is to go forward with KiwiGrip.
Most likely later this season.

ParticipantThe windlass is a lewmar 24v model. The thruster folks recommended optima batteries charged via a sterling 12v to 24v charger that feeds off of the house bank when it is being charged. This has worked well so far.
BTW.. Yacht thruster contends that this unit offers no more drag than the tunnel style thrusters.
Happy to answer any install questions once you get going…

Not sure you saw my repost of what I sent last year to CalicoJack.
Hopefully he will chime in as well.
I installed mine immediately aft of the front water tank. Plenty of room there for the post and electrics… just not much room to work in..I self installed a 24v 300S on our boat in 2013. The same forward battery is used to power the Windlass.

ParticipantI prefer to have someone crank we up.Rules: Prefer morning when it's cooler. No one involved has been drinking alcohol. There are two persons at the mast (cranker and tailer).I self climb with an ATN when necessary.L-36 has a good review of mast climbing optionsRickEclipserdugger
ParticipantI have not received any solicitations related to boat insurance.RickEclipse -
