Participantspeaking of batteries…
I have lead-acid batteries.
I’ve never equalized them… they’re 4 seasons old.
Anyone have any words of wisdom regarding this process?Rick

ParticipantAt the recommendation of the guys at our marina, who deal with some very
large motor vessels, I replaced my traditional stuffing box with the
SureSeal system from TidesMarine three seasons ago.
Easy Install. No regrets. No problems. It is a little more expensive than PSS but I believe it is more robust.
Additionally, if the seal does go bad, you can replace it without hauling
out (requires installing a spare seal on the shaft).
Evan Starzinger gave it his highest rating for reliable equipment.http://www.tidesmarine.com/shaft-seals.html

As September gets closer, we’ll find a suitable location.
I’ve been anchored in the creek at Reedville when the wind shifted and blew
the “smell of money” our way… whew it was not pleasant!Rick

Reedville isn’t one of my favorite places, at least when the Menhaden
plants
are processing. However there are lots of anchorages on the Great Wicomico
that are not so close to the plants. Also consider anchorages on the
Potomac – Coan River, Yecocomico River, St. Marys River, and Smith Creek.
I’m also up for any of the anchorages in Fleets Bay.On Tue, Apr 5, 2011 at 10:15 PM, Rick Dugger wrote:

It looks like we need to plan something in September when Bob Fine isin
the

*Bob Fine* – I usually take a 1-2 week cruise in September. As we get
closer
to September we’ll need to look at dates.
*Bob Hawkins* – Eclipse is in the water at Severn River Marina now. Weplan
to take her back to Mobjack Bay Marina this weekend (not sure which day).
How is the entrance to Salt Ponds? At one time it was pretty trickygetting
in and out of there.
*Capt Bill Tice* – don’t you keep Charisma in the Deltaville area? Wehave
a
week off June 11-19 and will be anchoring in Fishing Bay or Reedville on
the
weekends as we go North and again on our return. Maybe we could get
together
then.

There was a water heater discussion back in Sept of 09 that has many
troubleshooting suggestions.Here is what I wrote about my engine heated hot water situation;
Several months ago I posted a problem I was having relating to heating
domestic hot water with the engine. My engine would get hot but I could only
get sufficient domestic hot water if the engine had been running for a long
time.
I have a 10 year old Westerbeke 63C which I don’t think too many other
Pearson owners have. I eliminated an air lock as the source of my problem. I
replaced the existing Raritan 6 gallon water heater with a new Super Stor 6
gallon water heater thinking that there was poor heat transfer inside the
waterheater. When I removed and looked inside the old water heater there was
a considerable layer of deposits on the exchanger. However, even with the
new water heater, there was still inadequate hot water production. I could
feel that the hose going to the water heater did not get hot in relation to
the engine temperature.
I took my entire engine cooling system apart to confirm that the heat
exchanger was allowing flow from the water heater, replaced all the hoses
(to eliminate internal collapsing of hoses), cleaned the thermostat
housing/replaced the thermostat, and examined the vanes on the engine
coolant pump. All systems were normal.
I called Engines 1, the regional Westerbeke folks, and didn’t get much help
other than to get a couple of local mechanics who they recommended. I called
one of the mechanics who didn’t have any specific experience with this
engine. I described the flow of coolant thru the engine and water heater.
The hot water heater is a circuit off the manifold thru the hot water heat
and then back to the heat exchanger. He stated that the flow I described was
a poor design (too passive) and will be inadequate to provide hot water. He
stated that I needed to get my outflow to the water heater back at the
coolant pump where it would have more pressure to force it thru the water
heater. There was no way to do that. So, I added a small 12v Jabsco
circulation pump at the water heater that gets turned on manually when I
turn the engine on. I can leave this pump on after the engine is off and
continue to suck heat off the engine and into the water heater as long as
the engine is hot. This action greatly improved my hot water production.

ParticipantI also have the 16K btu model installed similar to Adam’s install.
Have used it for 3 summers.
We sail on the Southern Chesapeake Bay. We have been very satisfied. On the
hottest of days it struggles to keep the temp in the low to mid 70s but the
significantly reduced humidity makes up for it. On the hottest of days we’ll
turn off the AC to the aft cabin and close the door to the aft cabin, this
seems to help.
I’ve also found the Mermaid factory staff very helpful. I installed a
Mermaid 16K btu on our last boat (ODay 34) and used it for 4 years without
any problems.
The Honda 2000 generator should run it if you were desperate and not on the
grid.Rick

ParticipantI also need a couple of those little springs..
About a year ago Pompanette told me they don’t sell the springs separately..
It would be great to find that someone does.I believe a got my gasket material from Defender…
Don Casey in Sailmagazine March 2009 also recommends GE Silpruf SCS2000 or
Dow 795 Silicone when replacing the acrylic.Nice article about Dinghy Lifting Tor

It has ample power to move the boat. Probably more than enough. Ideally
it would be deeper in the boat but the spot between the water tank and the
bulkhead is really the only spot to locate it.If you want a quoted price for a full installation or components (tube)
give me a call.Chuck
