We really like the old electric model we have. It is very noisy…impossible
to sneek a pee in the middle of the night. One of the newer ultra quiet
models is on the list for next yr.

I have a 16K Mermaid heat pump on my 424.
In a test scenario, the Honda EU2000i has started and run it..
I have not used it to cool the boat for extended periods however…

    Hi Rich,

Honda makes a 3000 watt generator as well for a premium but which is not
    much larger than the 2000.

The only problem I see with running the 2000 near it’s peak power is that
it’s noisy running full throttle. Other than that, you’re golden.

Also, remember it’s an alternator/inverter combination so there will be
    some
equipment that just won’t run with it – some microwaves I’ve heard, and
    some
older appliances like refrigerators, ACs, and so forth. I’ve not had a
problem, but I use it to charge batteries and heat water, all mostly
    resistive loads.

I am telling you this because I don’t want you to be disappointed with the
    performance/noise levels.

    All the best,

We’ve exchanged lots of email about generators over the past few months.
I’ve decided to purchase a Honda EU2000i. I’ll pick it up later today.

I plan to use the generator for three purposes. I’ll use it on the boat
during the summer months when the boat is in the water. I’m planning to
modify my cockpit table to stow the generator. I have no mizzen mast so
there should be room. We have a camper that we occasionally use. I’ll

    bring

it with us when camping for rare occasions when we don’t have shore

    power.

Lastly, it will power my mother’s condo when she loses power. It will run
here furnace, one refrigerator, a small TV and a few lights.

Like every other project it seems, in the process of making a decision

    I’ve

ended up learning a lot more about generators then I ever thought I’d

    need

to know. I’d like the generator to power the 13,000 BTU air conditioner

    in

our camper. The Honda doesn’t have enough peak power capacity to start a
typical AC unit of this size however. I found references to a hard-start

    kit

for RV generators and ordered it for our unit. Research indicates that if

    I

modify the AC unit with one of these inexpensive gizmos, the 2kw

    generator

will run my AC unit. The generator is still marginal but It occurs to me
that folks down in the tropics who have installed an AC unit on their 424
may benefit from the same mod. Here’s a link to a discussion on the

    subject.

The two cutlass bearings I have installed did not have a recess for set screws.
Furthermore, I remember the fit being so tight I'm not sure I could have located a recess in front of the holes if I wanted to

    Hello Everybody,

On the attachment below is a picture of the burgee that the Flagchick sent me.  When you blow it up you can see that it is stitched and it looks like the solid body of the P is a piece of fabric sewn on.  I don't know if the 424 would be backwards or not.  You would have to ask her that.  I'm just going to order the original stock one that she has.  Unless there better alternatives.

When I owned a Columbia 8.3 we bought a Columbia burgee that had been made by Prestige Flags.
I visited their site last night and apparently there are at least 3 ways to make a flag/burgee
    (1) appliqued/ cut and stitched
    (2) embroidered
    (3) silk screened
from their pricing, flags can be made to read-wrong and read-right on both sides when letters/numbers are involved

If interested here is their site…
    http://www.prestigeflag.com/index.php
and their PDF that lists some pricing (not cheap) and describes the differences

I noticed that she has some single sided and some double sided flags. Will the Pearson burgee be double sided?
If numbers are added to the flag, it would need to be double sided so the numbers looked right from both sides right?
Interested in two (2) large units … vote for font B if we talking double sided…

    Those instructions are great.
On hull #73 using a press to remove the cutlass bearing was not an option. There was a lip at the forward end of the strut that prevented the use of a press.
We had to use a sawzall to cut the bearing and then worked it out in a fashion similar to the instructions.
The new bearing went in with a DIY jig similar to his after leaving the cutlass bearing in the freezer overnight.

If I'm successful, I'll try to get 424 owner's a discount.  I'll have to get manufacturers like Lewmar to sign a license agreement and tool up for the retrofit.  I don't expect to be directly involved with the retrofit.  I don't know if there are enough potential customers to convince Lewmar into investing in the tooling required to keep the cost down.  If about 10% or more of boats over 30 feet were interested, I think that would be enough.
