    I meant Skip.

    But you knew that.

I suppose a sea chest or seawater intake manifold is a
matter of preference and opinion. I see more potential
    danger from 4 or 5 or 6 extraneous thru-hull fittings –
lots of unnecessary holes in the bottom – than from a
single, properly made and maintained distribution
chamber. Whatever floats your boat, I guess… and
    keeps it floating.

Pearson doesn’t sound like a Swiss name, but he sure
    had a penchant for the cheese. 22 thru-hulls in a 42′
boat?! Crazy. I think Silverheels had nearly that many
when I bought her, but after my anti-hole rampage it’s
    like this:

    Below-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #1

Intake to seawater intake manifold, which feeds the
    following:
    – galley sink
    – watermaker
    – toilet
    – anchor/foredeck wash-down
    – bilge hose-down

    Below-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #2

    – engine raw water intake

    Below-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #1

    – galley sink drain

    Below-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #2

    – toilet discharge

That’s 4 holes below the waterline, plus a
    forward-scanning sonar thru-mounted.

There are another 6 thru-hulls above the waterline,
plus a small hole high in the transom for the propane
    locker drain.

So, 10-12 total, depending how you count. Not ideal,
    but an improvement.

    Skip & Adam,

    Welcome back.

The entry of free shipping into the mix changes the it
for me, making the parts (and maybe even the entire
stove/oven box itself if it’s in better shape than
mine) viable. So if Skip has transportation to Florida
for it, I’d be up for Plan A, in which he takes what he
needs for his oven and lets me have the rest. It was
just the $80-odd half/shipping for a what might amount
to a few knobs that put me off earlier.

    Thanks,

    Tor

You know, my guy may have feathered back and built up a
little on the inside, as well. It was 7 years ago and I
may not be recalling it perfectly.

    I removed 7 thru-hulls when I was upgrading my 424. It
was one of the few occasions when I elected to pay a
professional, to be sure it was done perfectly. Using
an angle grinder and plenty of experienced finesse, he
feathered the fiberglass out 3″ or 4″ radius from the
hole on the outside, feathered so that the ‘glass was
very thin at the edges of the original hole and
thickest at the feather’s perimeter of the feather.
Then he cut widening circles – from the hole size to
the extreme perimeter size – of mat & maybe some
roving, plus maybe the last 1 or 2 were cloth. Taping
some backed wax paper over the original hole on the
inside, the then wetted in each successively larger
cutout, building outward from the hole on the outside
of the hull, each patch overlapping a little move onto
the feathered ‘glass of the hull, until the last 6″-8″
circle of cloth was in place. He used polyester resin
for this. Once it set up, he sanded it smooth, then
coated with gel coat. It was a thoroughly professional,
very strong job that will last as long as the hull
does. To my knowledge this is the (only?) right way to
    seal a big hole like a thru-hull.

    Have fun,

    Tor

    Adam,

That’s an extremely generous offer, and much
appreciated. It would be a shame to just throw away a
    good stove.

Let me back up here for a moment. What condition is
your stove & oven overall, inside and out? Bright &
shiny, rusted & broken, somewhere in between? I ask
because my original thought was that it might be in
better physical shape than mine, which has a crooked
oven door hinge (but is otherwise in good, clean
condition, and fully functional except for one cranky
    stovetop burner).

It is cool. I saw it on Facebook yesterday. A few
    helpful hints:

    http://earth.nullschool.net

Planet Earth – a supercomputer visualization of global
wind flows, updated every three hours.
    .
    – press F11 to toggle full-screen
    – use your scroll wheel to zoom in/out
    – click and hold to turn the globe in any direction
    – double-click on a location to get its latitude and
longitude & average wind speed and direction

    Quent,

Yes, but it’s not fair to ask a gift-giver to put in an
additional half-day’s work stripping it down and
dividing, packaging and shipping the parts, especially
at such a busy time of year. Adam very kindly offered
to send or store the unit. He has already put himself
out for us. Perhaps someone can use the entire stove
which, I gather is fully functional.

Mea culpa for not thinking it through from the outset.

    Adam,

It seems like a reasonable shipping rate and I thank
    you for getting it.

Adam, after the initial excitement of scavenging a few
knobs & spares for my old Hillrange, the reality is
they’re probably not worth even half of $164 to me. My
stove/oven is working, and I don’t even know when I’ll
be back in the US to strip out the parts from yours. So
I guess I ought to pass on your very kind offer. My
apology for any inconvenience my initial exuberance
    caused. Ditto to you, Skip.

Please feel free to give the stove to Skip and/or
anyone else who can use it.

    Thanks,

    Tor

I’ve used Meguiars Wax from AutoZone and it seems to do
all right. Maybe Practical Sailor has done an in-depth
comparison and rating of boat waxes.

As for stains from bird droppings (or berries or leaves
or anything else organic), chlorine bleach, even
slightly diluted with water, usually makes them vanish.
(For rust stains, use phosphoric acid such as Ospho.)

After I reconfigured Silverheels’ chain locker (which
involved cutting out the original anchor well and
decking it over), I painted the entire deck and
in-facing toe rail area forward of the coachhouse. It’s
been a while, but believe I used a Rustoleum “marine”
(meaning it has some UV stuff in it) enamel paint from
Ace Hardware. I fussed with the color a bit to get it
as close as I could to the original gel coat since they
meet at a point even with the forward end of the
coachhouse. The color match is fair, not excellent, but
it’s not an eyesore. I don’t think you’d notice if you
weren’t looking for it. That paint has held up these
past 5 years in the tropics and still looks fine.

    Adam,

Skip and I have worked it out to share, since needs
some oven parts, which I do not. He can do this now,
while I’m away, and then store the stove in Florida
    until I get back. It’s a win/win.

Again, thanks very much for passing that stove along.
(Any ballpark clue what it’s going to cost to ship,
preferably by mule cart or whatever’s least expensive?)
