No problems that I’ve noticed with the LED
    tricolor+VHF/SSB/AIS on Silverheels.

That all sounds fine, Skip. As long as you can store it
until I’m back (as Adam so kindly offered to do), have
    at it.

That’s unhappy news about ProFurl. I’ve long thought
they were one of the good ones. What brand(s) are savvy
    sailors buying these days?

    Skip,

That sounds fine to me. My unit’s oven is fine. (I
rebuilt it last year.) From Adam’s Hillrange I could
use the knobs, a couple of the stovetop knob
mechanisms, maybe a top burner or two, and one or two
stovetop grills if they’re in decent shape. Ultimately,
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone at Green Cove
Springs Marina even finds a secondary use for the
    stripped out box. Nothing wasted!

That’s very kind of you, Adam. Thank you. I’ll arrange
the shipping as soon as I’m back in Florida – whenever
    that happens.

Thank you, Alan. I’ve kept Silverheels’ original
Hillrange working, but one burner is pretty much
unusable now, most of the knobs have been replaced by
generics that don’t fit, and the oven door hinge is
half busted. Perhaps between yours and mine I could
create a whole, fully-functional unit – with parts to
    spare!

The problem is logistics and timing. I believe it would
be worth the cost of UPS ground to me to get your
Hillrange to my homeport boat yard in NE Florida once
I’m there, but I don’t expect to be back for at least 6
months, maybe a year and 6 months if I decide to keep
cruising in the spring. So, if your old Hillrange is in
your way or if someone takes it off your hands sooner,
c’est la vie. I still appreciate the offer. If on the
other hand you still have that beauty when I get back
to the States, I’d be delighted to pay the shipping and
    have it.

    Much appreciated,

    Tor

Better make it a watertight drawer.

    Adam,

I could put it to good use by combining it with the one
I have, the best of both units. Where is it located?

in reply to: Water Tank Vent #80366

My water tank vents have never been a problem because I
dare not fill my tanks. That’s because I have never
managed to adequately seal the inspection ports. I
installed all new O-rings in the plastic ports Pearson
put in, but they still leak when the tanks are full. Of
course, I could seal those holes so nothing ever gets
through them, but I need easy-open inspection ports for
periodic cleaning and, well, inspecting – checking
    water levels and dirt accumulation.

My solution has been to avoid filling the tanks to the
brim. I watch/feel through an open inspection port when
taking on freshwater and stop when the level reaches
about an inch below the tank top. It’s a modest PIA,
but it works. Of course, this way the tank vents never
come into play at all, so I haven’t bothered to
    rearrange them.

Has anyone found a quick-opening water tank port cover
    that doesn’t leak?

Thanks, Dan. Hey, if we can’t laugh at ourselves,
    everyone else still will.

I’ll be interesting to see how SAIL edited that
anchoring story, which was originally titled, “Learning
the Do’s and Donuts.” (I’ve just requested a PDF copy
of it from them.) I’ve also got altogether 5 Cruising
Tips in the November and December issues of SAIL, all
ideas from Silverheels’ refit that worked out well.
Plus, that little boast about Silverheels hitting 9.7
knots SOG, “Bragging Rights,” which I originally wrote
as a note to this forum, is slated to appear in the
    December issue of Cruising World.

    Been a busy scribbler.

Actually, Quent, it’s Newark, New Jersey. Doesn’t get
much crueler or more sadistic than that.

But to clinch the ruse, I’ve just uploaded a few photos
(cut out of travel magazines, of course) to accompany
    the logblog text.

    Warren,

You may be right in your assumption, but as mentioned
my PO freewheeled Silverheels’ Paragon transmission for
at least 15 years, if not 30. The engine hour meter
read incredibly low for the boat’s age, but in any case
the transmission imploded just weeks after I bought the
boat. Seems to me any boat mechanic could tell at a
glance which tranny you have. Snap a photo and show it
    to one.

Looking forward to meeting you again in a happier
    place.
