Thanks, Bob. I think I get the idea. In any case, it doesn’t apply to the vane I’m installing.

Still hoping to hear from others with windvanes on 424’s regarding signs of stress on the transom. Maybe it’s a non-issue, but there’s nothing like a few thousand nautical miles to make it a certainty.

Thanks, but I suspect you’ve got plenty of hippity hopping to do around your own boat.

I have a Dremel tool – don’t know how I ever lived without it. What does the Dremel Multi-Max tool do (and why do I expect finding out is going to cost me the price of one)?

    Bob,

How long has the Monitor been on your boat? Do you know whether the PO used it much? What is “the forwardmost stern rail?”

    Dear Don C,

I appreciate your interest in our group, too. However, with respect, your “total average rebuild (cost of) $560” does not include paying a boat yard mechanic a million dollars per hour to remove, ship, and re-install the unit, plus tax, plus the yard’s mark-up on your labor and parts, plus your shipping and handling charges to return same to those of us outside of Jersey City, NJ. Plus tax. Plus tax. I personally thank you for your feedback on this subject – your company builds a fine product and we all benefit by it – but do consider the consumer’s real total expense for these things. I suspect it’s closer to $1,000 than $560.

    Best regards,

Thanks, Rodd. I don’t suppose we must necessarily take that number as gospel just because a large paint manufacturer made the estimate, but we might expect they applied some sort of logic to reach their conclusion.

As it turns out it’s now a moot point for me, at least this time around. I bought a discounted 5-gallon can of International antifouling paint (42% cuprous oxide) and will do my best to use it all up. Ought to get at least 3 coats out of it.

I take it your friend makes these mattresses in England. Do you mean you’ll get yours over there when you eventually sail your boat across, or is your “visit” more imminent? Will the guy ship? Are these things uncommonly expensive? I ask because I’m due for a new aft cabin mattress. The Froli support helps, but it doesn’t make up for dead foam.

What is “medical mattress grade stuff?” High density foam, a real spring mattress…?

    Aaron,

I bought the Froli system at the Annapolis sailboat show last fall, but I use it in the aft cabin berth. It definitely improves the bunk’s comfort level. Not sure what wood trim pieces you’re talking about in the V-berth unless it’s the fiddles at the after end, where the filler piece joins. The Froli pieces can be adjusted – fitted – to accommodate odd bunk shapes. Can’t you just not snap them together where the fiddles intrude.

    Bob,

I bought one of those inline button fixtures at Home Depot. It doesn’t quite shut off the water flow. The lever on my (original?) shower nozzle works better than that fixture. Occasional lubrication helps.

Thanks for that feedback, Norris. You’re right that there’s a bit more up front work involved installing a staysail rig as opposed to a Solent, but it’s proving less difficult than I thought it was going to be. Like most boat projects, it boils down to a lot of small, doable steps, one after the other. In any case, for the kind of sailing I envision for myself I believe it’ll pay long term dividends that’ll more than justify the extra effort now.

Clearly, though, those of you with Solent rigs are happy with them and that’s all that really matters.
