I’ve been thinking about this as well: http://shipsrecord.com/blogs/patrick/archive/2008/03/15/secondary-propulsion.aspx

Not much concrete in terms of facts yet.

If I read you correctly you have a separate antenna attached to your backstay. In general, if your antenna is higher than head height you should be getting less exposure to the signal. However, kind of like a yagi antenna, I’m sure your backstay also gets some energy pumped into, so I could theoretically see the possibility of getting a bit of a zap off your backstay but I don’t think the risk is very high.

I’m not sure about the copper, good antenna tuners can do wonders with almost nothing apparently.

Yep… I know that. I asked him about RF exposure and any experience of getting shocked and he said no, but yeah in general I agree with you. That said on CruisersForum.com (or maybe it was SSCA) it was discusses that this is the cheapesteasiest way to get on the air. I plan to move to an isolated stay when I re-rig.

I haven’t really validated all this for myself, but here is how the previous owner described the antenna setup on Deep Playa, #152.

“The Antenna Tuner is mounted forward in the Port cockpit locker. The antenna tuner has two connections. The antenna side is connected with #8 stranded wire to the chainplate for the main backstay. All the chainplates were bonded together (along with through hull fittings, etc.) with #8 stranded wire. The ground wire that was attached to that chainplate was removed and attached to the grounding terminal on the antenna tuner. What you end up with is a whole series of closed loops instead of a single separate isolated antenna wire and a large ground plane in the bilge. I cannot explain how it works, but it does.”

I think I’ve come to understand this as the antenna consists of a random length wire hooked to a really nice antenna tuner. The random length wire is made up of all of the standing rigging bonded together.

Our only complaint is that we can’t see devoting all that space to a table which we won’t use. I say that because on land, we don’t have a dining table, nor a big couch, nor much space either. 2 years ago we downsized from 1200sq ft to 650sq ft and we think less is more in terms of stuff especially within a small space.

I’d just chalk it up to us being weird. 😉

That is a pretty good setup as for what Dawn and I plan to do, we my do nothing, at home we don’t have a dining room table either. We mostly eat sitting on our chairs (we don’t have a couch either). The bowl is my favorite way to eat so it works out. The best setup we’ve seen is on Island Packets which have a fold-down table on the forward bulkhead. However the mast on the IP’s I’ve been on is forward of this bulkhead so they don’t’ have to contend with a fold out table trying to go around the mast. Still, it might be possible with come creative use of hinges.

Another idea is that we could have a small post mounted table but more like a coffee table set off to one side which would divide one of the settees into two chairs.

My gut says we won’t do anything to add a table. It would be good (necessary) to add some ceiling grab rails in the salon though so there is something to hang-onto when underway.

John, I’m beginning to think maybe I should my questions to you then send the answers to the list for archival. 😉 This is EXACTLY the kind of thoughtful information from someone who’s been there, done that, sent the postcard that a new owner needs.

Thanks a lot for the reply!

Sea Spirit has a pretty interesting setup, she pulls here excess chain down into the sewer through a PVC pipe with a windlass.

I am pretty enamored with this as a concept, not to sure how well it is working for Steve the owner though.

If my deal goes through I was thinking about paying someone to make some printmfg quality artwork of all the logos so I can get replacement decals, when needed for sails, silly personal use, etc.

The logos I am aware of are:

      * Pearson Yachts text with the pitchfork/”P” Flag logo as seen on the traveler housing
      * Pearson 424 text with the pitchfork/”P” Flag logo as seen in the brochures. I don’t think this is even on the boat anywhere
      * 424 text with the pitchfork/”P” Flag logo as seen on the sails

Are there any other combinations or logos I’m missing? When I get this done (won’t be till this summer) I’ll share all the original artwork files.

yep, totally agree, its all about trade-offs.

Free Spirit’s set up appears to stow the chain further aft and lower down than the “official” chain locker. Perhaps that
    was the installer’s reasoning.
