ParticipantFor one with little knowledge of this (I’ve never had to replace a traveler before) why is a flat track better than a curved one? I looked at the Gerhauer site and they do have a curved one. I guess I would go with the SS wedges if I go “flat”.

ParticipantPatrick:
Thanks for taking a look. Now I know where to plumb the sump to. And I’ll try to put it into the scupper thru hull.

ParticipantFor those of you who have installed 2 bilge pumps, a simple question from someone looking for advice. Are both of the pumps discharging into the same hose? It seems to me that the lower pump would prevent back flow from the second pump if it was operating, assuming that both pumps had separate intakes into the same discharge hose.
Guiding experience is sought as I wrestle with another pump. I had the v drive rebuilt recently and the worker did not brace the shaft. Evidently a wake threw the shaft forward and water started coming in. A neighbor noticed the constant pump discharge and called me. Nothing like a call that your boat is sinking while 5,000 miles away!

ParticipantThanks for the info. I thoroughly checked under the floorboards for a sump and found nothing, only the holding tank. Just forward of the v drive is a flat open space (which falls to the abyss of the bilge on the other side) that shows no sign of any previous rework and is the home of the high water alarm. Just aft of the mast step (accessed through the small access panels around the mast) is the holding tank.
My plan is to install one of the sumps with a pump from West on the flat space forward of the v drive. What would be the recommended way to tie the output from the pump to an overboard discharge in the existing plumbing system? It seems to make sense to tie it into the discharge from the macerator. But how would I prevent back flow into the holding tank without installing a manual valve that would be a pain to access every time you would want to shower? How can I get the shower water out of the boat?

ParticipantThanks John. It looks like she is weakening and will just be a tropical storm that will hit Monday/Tuesday. No hurricane party at the Waikiki YC scheduled yet.

ParticipantLady Leanne was on the cover of Cruising World’s January 1989 issue. She was also on the cover of CW’s 1990 calendar. She was used as a day charter on Kauai’i for several years. Her biggest claims to fame were surviving Iniki and having Al and Tipper Gore sailing on board when he was VP (the skipper told me that it was hilarious that the secret service followed in a launch (seasick) and there were noisy choppers overhead killing the serenity.

ParticipantAnother thing that can reduce water flow significantly is a plugged up v-drive. I just had mine rebuilt.
When the top cover of the casing was removed, the salt buildup had reduced the water flow path to about the diameter of a pencil. It had to be sand blasted out!
After reassembly and installation of the unit, I have full and healthy water flow. It’s noticeable on the temp gage as well.
A word to the wise. If you rebuild the v-drive, be sure to bake the casing to remove all moisture from the metal. Then paint. My guy baked all except the top cover plate. The metal cracked when installing it. I’ll have to machine a new cover plate now. 30 year old cast iron is brittle!

ParticipantThe PO must have removed the blower from my boat. I’ve never missed it and wonder why you would need one if the boat is diesel.
My other yacht is a Hunter 33.5 with a Yanmar. It’s never had a blower since I bought it new (1988).

ParticipantA freshwater foot pump is also silent. No need to wake up guests in the aft cabin (my pump is located behind a small panel at the foot of the bunk) with the droning of an electric pump.

ParticipantFYI for all who are looking for a new fixed prop. I’ve found a place that manufactures them: West by North Enterprises (604.506.2032). They produce the Campbell Sailor propeller, a 3 blade LH, 17″ diameter, 10″ pitch for a 1.5″ shaft. They state that this size is recommended to have good cruising rpm and still have reserve for head wind and seas. Price $680 + shipping. They state that it has been successfully used on other 424’s with a 58 Westie.
I will be replacing a LH 18″ dia, 12″ pitch for a 1.5″ shaft which the PO let dissolve.

ParticipantI am purchasing a set of mast pulpits and the guy at Railmakers said he would throw in the fasteners, but needed to know what length bolts to include. For those of you who have installed the pulpits, what length fastener would you recommend. I would obviously like to keep the fittings behind the coach house ceiling panels if possible.
Thanks

ParticipantAlan:
I just saw a pic on the site of a 424 owner that had built a box/table between the mizzen and the binnicle for his propane tank. This reminded me of a 42′ cat that I recently checked out, where the owner mounted his genset in a similar box/table in the cockpit. It might be an easier/safer alternative. Of course, this is off the top of the head without regard for reality items such as measurements.

ParticipantTo all with installed mast pulpits:
What size bolts/nuts did you use to correctly mount the pulpits? With a potential Matson shipping strike, Home Depot’s stock might be running thin. I don’t want to spend an afternoon wandering around O’ahu trying to find a simple fastener so I hope to buy them before I go on island.

ParticipantFor those of you with pulpits: How did you mount them? Did you install a backing plate? Any “unique” problems locating them on a ketch? I plan to purchase a set (my last cartoon style move to the forward deck off of Koko Head cinched my decision).

ParticipantAre the mast pulpits custom made or do you know if Railmakers has the plans on file? It gets really rolly polly where the Alaska rollers squeeze in the channels between the islands and I’ve definitely put pulpits on my list.
