ParticipantNothing like rebuilding the head on a rainy, humid day! Your wife’s a brave soul. Constant rain here on O’ahu today. No leaks…..yay!

ParticipantFYI: I just had the mechanical fitting on the top of my forestay come apart and almost lost the whole rig. The culprit? The rigger that installed it used 5200 to “set” the fitting, rather than the correct Locktite application. Luckily, my jib halyard held it together in lighter winds off O’ahu.

ParticipantI had a carpenter make a frame for the door unit that interfaced the flat door frame with the curved shower wall. No leaks and worth the pro touch for looks. I installed two shelves and we keep all our towels in there. Also upgraded the shower mixer as well as the hand held shower head. Mounted the wall fixture for affixing the hand held unit on the inboard corner.

ParticipantTor: I used black Sikaflex when I had to rebed a skylight on my Hunter 33.5. The stuff I used was black and was easy to work with. I rebedded the skylight around 7-8 years ago and never had problems with leaks again (I sold the boat last summer so I could direct all my attentions and pocketbook to our 424). I would not hesitate to recommend the stuff.

ParticipantI installed a large locker door in the back of the shower and put in two shelves. We keep all of our towels in there. Nice and dry! Also put in a nice shower control unit.

ParticipantQuent: thanks for the idea of a vent for the upper thermostat housing to bleed that area. I bought a spare W 58 from another owner that repowered and use it for parts. The upper thermo housing on the spare engine had a threaded port that I believe was used for a temp sensor. The port threads fit a petcock that I bought at an auto store, and I removed and replaced the original housing with this now vented unit. Westerbeke must have changed the thing on later engines.
After going through the frustrating process of methodically rebuilding the raw and fresh water systems, my overheating problems are finally solved. This air bubble problem, of course, is not mentioned in any engine literature and had me tearing my hair out. I offer the following guidelines:
1. Never, ever mix antifreezes. The resultant goo plugs up the cooling passages. Yes, I unknowingly did this
2. Never, ever use a flush product unless it is friendly to aluminum. After gumming up my system, the flush I used ate holes through the inlet/outlet pipes on the aluminum exhaust manifold. Lucky I had a spare engine.
Duh!Hopefully this will save another W 58 owner some grief.

ParticipantIn my opinion, Hawai’i is a great sailing area. The trades are 15-20 almost 90% of the time and you can’t beat the weather. Year round. The only negative is that you have to cross the channels to get to the other islands. Conditions can be iffy and seasonal.
There are slips available and are they are generally cheaper than most apartment rentals. There’s a great live aboard community out here at Ko Olina. By the way, there is my 424 ketch and a 422 here in the marina.
Patrick, contact me when you get here. I’d be happy to help in any way.

ParticipantMadsailor: the head on my Pearson is a PH II. I’ve left white vinegar in it for up to 4 Weeks when I’m off island and have had no problems. Of course, there’s always tomorrow. I also have a Jabsco on my powerboat back in Atlanta. I’ve rebuilt both and concur, the PH II is a better unit.
I am also of the school that nothing goes in the head unless you’ve eaten it first. I keep a small trash can in each head for TP. The designated “King or Queen” for the day gets to dispose of the contents during head cleanup.

ParticipantInteresting. I left my boat several times for a month with white vinegar in the head. Never had a problem.

ParticipantI always pump some white vinegar through the head and let it set when I leave the boat for a while. Doing this once a month keeps the “coral build up” off of the joker valve and inner workings.

ParticipantJohn/Others: It’s one of those. They have a size that fits the ice box shelf perfectly. The only challenge is to install some sort of mechanism to keep the shelf sliding out when on tack. I just cut a dowel the right length to keep it locked in position.
